Thought I'd see if someone could suggest how to make those 14500 Ultrafires fit in my 3 AA 5v box mod. I don't want to wreck my mod, which I would do if I pulled the battery contacts out to pound them down. I wondered how short can I cut the negative contact springs to make room for that extra millimeter? My blue Trustfires fit nice & snug in there now.

Thanks!

One thing you might want to do after snipping off a satisfactory amount---

get a tweezer or better yet, two tweezers, with one tweezer to hold the spring around the middle to keep it stationary and the other tweezer to bend the cut end inwards so there's no chance of you "spking" or gouging the negative base of the battery.

When I do trim off a spring, I often end up with a chiseled end which isn't ideal. Or use a dremel if you can get it in there and round off the cut end so it behaves.

Thanks all--I did snip off some of the spring (which had previously been snipped) and managed to CRAM those Ultrafires into the box. Working like a charm, I just hope my shorter Trustfires will still fit well into their snug lil slots when I swap out. I did bend the wires inward to prevent gouging the bottoms of the batteries. Boy, it's always something with these contraptions, huh?

Anyone have a good source to buy these at that will always fit box mods? I bought 4 Ultrafire 14500s and none of them fit in my 5V mod from ecigmods. I just purchased 2 AW 14500s because they usually are smaller, so I'm hoping they work. Clipping springs didn't help and before that I ruined one of my 14500s by trying to scrunch it in there. So, I have to use 10440s :)() until the AWs show up.

Hello redgirl,
On this mod are the battery post tabs slots still there on the side opposite the main off and on switch? This will make them fit tight.
Also if they are still there Ez Duzit tells how to do this in this thread right after picture 8 he mentions cutting the slots off.

My 14500 are Trustfire Brand and might be slightly different but all fit so far from dealextreme.
DealExtreme: $4.73 TrustFire Protected 14500 3.7V 900mAh Lithium Batteries (2-Pack Blue) just long shipping time.

Madvapes has the shorter ones in now...just make sure you write vendors before you order to see if they are the older shorter ones first... been there done that have four long ones I can't use :)

I mod my mod. I use a 5v box mod too and alternate between the shorter Trustfires, the long Ultrafires, and the latest shorter Ultrafires from Madvapes. I keep "spacers" (battery contacts) and slip them in with the shorter ones, since I had to make more space for the longest ones. You can also keep a little screwdriver or anything that will push behind the battery contacts at the "top" (the end with the atty connector) and pry just a bit to move them inward. When you switch back to long ones, the batteries will push the contacts back again. A pain, yes, but it's still workable.

Here's a pic of mine. I don't have a dremel, but maybe tin snips would work? Are the battery contacts epoxied? Just wondering if they'll stay if I snip those off.

Hello redgirl,
I was wondering why the batteries are in fact not able to fit. Is it like the one in this post 1mm longer?
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-ultrafire-14500s-1mm-longer.html#post1245809

If it is due to the 1mm longer I don`t know that this will fix the not fitting. I haven`t had any of these batteries to play with so if anyone wants to get rid of some PM me. Cheap is good.

Now on to your question
They are not usually epoxied on these boxes unless itwas done by the mod maker. They do have little gripper clips on them and it grabs the plastic a little.
Stick a flat head screwdriver under the battery contacts edge and twist it this will start it up then grab the contacts with pliers to pull them out.

One thing to check here is to see just where the battery is making contact causing it to not fit. And be sure not to make a change that will cause the normal size batteries to not fit. The springs also look full there. Could be shortened as well.

Those tabs are usually the first thing to go in my mods and then use epoxy or even hot glue, Super Glue or something to stick the contacts to the box wall itself. This thing is nice for cutting plastic. Although a old knife and candle would also work.
Shop Weller Electric 25-Watt, 8-Piece Short Barrell Hobby Iron Kit at Lowes.com

It heats these blades up they work great for slicing those tabs off nice and clean.
Hope this works for you.

Aah, a few scratches and dents on your battery don't hurt anything.:p

OK, I'm being sarcastic. But my first 2 14500 batteries are mashed to a pulp on the positive end. Same problem--too tight of a mod. They both still work good, take a charge and hold one. Should probably trash them both but they're the only ones I have(waiting on an order).

I have a solution, but many will hate it.

Translucent AAA-to-AA Battery Converter Case (8-Pack) [E0956] : BestOfferBuy.com, Buy DVD, Shop for PC accessories, Discount MP3 Players, Bargain Deal for Surveillance Equipment, Cheap R4 for NDS, X-sim Unlock

Use 10440 protected with an adapter. Even with the extra space of the protection circuit they will fit in the adapter and therefore into your boxes.

I've used plastic tubing with the ID of an AAA bat and the OD of an AA bat to do the same thing when it became obvious that my intended mod wouldn't fit even the old protected batts.

With the adapters, you'll be cutting the positive end off of one and the negative end off the other, then glueing them into place.
