i turned to diy because i cannot handle the drying effects of PG in 50/50 juice that are locally available to me. my goal was a 20/80 ratio with 20mg nic. my supplies were this:
VZ.com - 100mg PG nicotine base, 0mg VG and a few flavors from VZ one super concentrate and one regular strength to make a light flavored coffee juice. (excellent deal if you can take PG)
the juice came out great, perfect amount of flavor and nicotine. however it is still rough on my throat a in kayfun built to 1.4ohms running at 2.9 volts with 6 or 7 wraps 30 gauge. i know that airflow is a limiting factor in my kayfun with attempting to reduce throat hit but everything else is tweaked to perfection for wicking, airflow and the microcoil's efficiency to make low temp vapor. i will be trying 29 and 28awg kanthal when it is back in stock at temco.
i have since added more VG to my juice to bring the NIC and PG down to around 12/88 and 12mg. (my wick setup will keep up with 100% VG and chain vaping.)
my QUESTION is do i need to buy my nicotine base in VG at my target strength of 15-20mg and use NO PG, or do i need to learn to live with something around 5-7mg nic strength to get rid of the tingling feeling left in my throat after each vape?
thank you for any feedback this may turn up. i am posting on behalf of two converts that i have mixed juice for who express the same feelings about loving the nicotine trength at 15-20% but not loving the throat hit. please be the hero of our juice story! i tried and failed.

PG is not the problem in 50/50 the 20mg nic has more of a pepper kick than a lesser strength would. Drop to 18mg by dilluting with distilled water or try adding 2 drops ethyl maltol per ml. This will help to soften the hit as many vendors use pga to increase it. Some people enjoy a very harsh throat hit but others cannot handle it.

at 12mg with a 88%vg you shouldn't have bad throat hit at all. May be your NIC, VG or flavoring. I would narrow it down by process of elimination. Vape the VG alone and see if it's ruff. If not mix just the NIC base and VG to 12mg and vape that alone. Is it ruff? If not then start looking at the flavors.

i have tried everything including getting the coil damn near touching the air hole. what i have found concerning throat hit is there is a fine balance between air flow and having the coil as close as possible without constricting it. i think around 1mm or a little less than the thickness of a dime is the most mellow spot for it.

i did mix up another base batch at 15/85 15mg nic and it was less peppery so it seems like half of the problem is the flavoring the other half being the nic.

i am hoping that a good portion of my problem with throat hit will be solved by using 28awg kanthal to achieve more surface area on the wick. maybe it will lower the physical temp of vape and produce vapor faster. i take at least three second drags right now with my optimal setup on 30awg. hope to cut that time in half by using about 8-9 wraps with the lower resistance wire and still be around 1.4ohms.

Sweetening and smoothing will not fix the throat hit. Try what I suggested. If you think it's the coil try a CE4 to see if it makes a difference. If you can improve the air flow then do that but eliminate the problem being with the juice first.
i feel like i should buy a juice that is professionally mixed at 100VG just to see what it should really be like. i know people out there chain vape good sized clouds of boba's bounty. if doing something like that would give me a smooth flavorful vape, i would be tempted to spend the extra money to be happy.

update on a problem i found. over the course of a few days my cotton swells inside the coil and chokes despite looking fully saturated. i dont think 5/64 inch inner diameter coils are going to work for me anymore. they work great but only last about a day before starting to tingle.
regarding Danny's post, i dont understand how i always manage to piss people off. i asked a question and everyone had valid answers, all were taken note of and will be addressed one by one. i usually hesitate to ask questions because of this kind of thing. oh well, at least yall set me on the right track. sorry.
