I recently bought an evic, which i really enjoy using and it came with a samsung 18650 2600mah battery, but I'll need to get a spare or two and i would rather have a branded protected battery. The site where i got my evic are selling the same battery for £15 (can get it a couple £ cheaper with a discount) although it doesnt say if it is protected.

I would prefer the 3400mah battery for obvious reasons, and when i looked on amazon you can get 2 of these with a panasonic cell (actual brand name is xtar) that are protected for about £26. These are obviously better value, but i wanted to check if anyone has bought these and if they know whether they will be the same size as the samsungs as i have heard 18650 batteries are not all the same size, some are flat topped, some are nippled, etc.

Cheers in advance for any replies :)

For the Evic, you want the NCR18650B.

For mechanicals, you want the NCR18650PD.

Here's a respected Ebay vendor with a reasonable price on the 18650B's. Fast shipping and the batteries come in an insulated cardboard shipping container.

2X Panasonic 18650 3 6V 3400mAh Rechargeable Li ion Battery NCR18650B 3100 | eBay

If you trust FastTech and don't mind waiting on the slow boat from China, go ahead. Personally, I do not trust them for batteries.

I do trust the Ebay vendor, who offered to show me the invoice from his Panasonic rep.

    Are these protected batteries?

    https://www.fasttech.com/p/1141100

And are they safe to use in mechanical mods as well as a VAMO V3?

Fasttech is a company that specializes in clones & counterfeit products. Not exactly what I would consider a "trusted source" for batteries.
They may be cheap ........... but they may also be cheap when it comes to quality as well.

Counterfeit batteries are a real problem, and one thing you can count on, a counterfeiter is NOT going to go out and buy expensive quality cells to put counterfeit labels on.

Yeah because it is so hard for anyone with a PC and a printer to fake an invoice

For your information, IMR's or the new hybrids are the official batteries recommended for both regulated and mechanicals according to the battery guru's of ECF. A couple of years ago "protected ICR/NCR li-ion" batteries were, but the IMR's have proven to be a safer battery and now recommended for all applications.

Here's the link to that recommendation and it explains it more, and I've also condensed all the battery resources that I could find in a blog. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/464216-bought-my-first-mech-mod-need-some-pointers.html#post10587935

I got my panasonic ncr18650pd's from fasttech and I believe they are genuine. They last longer than my panny cgr18650ch's from orbtronic as they should being a higher mah rating so if they are a fake they are pretty good but I doubt they are. Fasttech sells genuine batteries for a great price and they come in a nice plastic case.

imho, fasttech is a reputable and trustworthy vendor. yes, they do sell a lot of clones, but that's not what they specialize in (they don't even specialize in electronic cigarettes). they're kind of like a chinese amazon.

if you're not sure whether or not something is real, look for the manufacturer listing or "authentic" or "genuine" in the description. both of the batteries linked have panasonic listed as the manufacturer, so i'd be willing to bet that they're the real deal. on the other hand, if something is a clone, they won't list a manufacturer or make any claim to its authenticity. for example:

$16.35 Trident Stainless Steel Rebuildable Atomizer at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

$11.54 Sentinel M16 Mod Telescoping E-Cigarette Battery Compartment - silver / aluminum + brass / no floating pin at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

$35.22 Ithaka Adjustable Rebuildable Atomizer (4.0mL) at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

google "fasttech review" and one of the first things that pops up is an independent ratings website showing that over 2500 customers give them 9/10 stars overall:

FastTech Reviews - fasttech.com Ratings at ResellerRatings

whether you personally trust them or not is up to you, but just know that they are a serious and legitimate business, and i very highly doubt they'd risk their reputation to swindle a handful of vapers out of a few dollars.

The NCR18650PD is protected. The NCR18650B is not.

it's actually the other way around...

3400mAh Protected Panasonic 18650 battery cell by Orbtronic

NCR18650PD High Drain Panasonic 18650 2900 mAh Li-ion Battery free shipping from Florida

typically traditional icr li-ion batteries are protected. the chemistry allows for a higher max capacity, but they form internal micro-shorts more easily under heat, and are more likely to go boom if they fail.

high-drain imr and hybrid batteries are more likely to be offered as unprotected. you can't get as much capacity (hybrids get more than imr's, but less than icr's), but in return you get a high amp draw (imr's get more than hybrids), and a failure is more likely to be a fizzle (still very hot, though).
