Recently I picked up a samsung 25R for my pico and figured I would charge it via USB. As expected the charging is quite slow but I just remembered that I have an old 18650 charger lying around from a few years ago

Are there any compatibility issues with charging these new batteries? and if so, what information do I need to determine whether it will safely charge?

The charger is a trustfire TR-001

I don't recommend charging batteries in mods.

Two of the best 18650 chargers are Nitecore, or Xtar.

I might catch flak for this but I still use my trustfire tr-001. 25r's and HE2's all charge fine. In a baking dish with the lid on and don't leave it unattended. Works fine after 4 years.
Guess I got lucky.
MMcQ the problem is sometimes batteries get hot or vent during charging.

It is far bettee to ruin a $14 charger than ruin your mod and force you back on stinkies until you replace the mod.

The Trustfire only has a 500mA output or 2x250mA if you charge two batteries at the same time (web specs). I use a Nitecore I4 that has a total out put of 1500mA/750mAx2/500mAx3/375mAx2. Your unit is compatible and should work fine but it will take a little longer to charge the batteries full. Assuming that it is in good condition it should work fine.

@Two_Bears I think you missed the point of my post. I have 2 Pico's and a couple of other 18650 mods. Never used the USB to charge for that very reason.. and I'm impatient and like to have batt's on the ready:) I was just relaying that an old Trustfire in working condition should be up to the task of recharging newer cells. Might be slower than the newer chargers but hey, if its what you got and it works.. Use it.
*additionally, if you have a multimeter I'd say check the batteries after charging to verify that you are indeed the proud owner of a working trustfire-001. Can never be too safe.

Having been a member of ECF for a few years now, I recall back in the early days reading several posts of people using Trustfire chargers which caused batteries to flame or the charger itself flamed. At one time I had images saved to my Photobucket account, but since I didn't keep that account up to date the account was closed by Photobucket.

I tried Google Images to find pics of Trustfire chargers which suffered fire incidents, but wasn't successful.

My :2c:, don't trust any company with the word "fire" in the name ... batteries or chargers.

If you choose to use that Trustfire charger, I suggest using it on a metal cooking pan or pyrex dish.

Battery chargers have become a bit safer, but they also use more power to charge faster. That creates more heat. I have two Xtar models. To my understanding, the slower a battery charges, the less heat is created and the overall longevity of the battery doesn't decrease as fast.

I haven't been concerned about meltdown or fire. My chargers are in the garage in a cake pan with a cigar box for all the batteries beside it. (many rechargeable sizes) It is just where all the batteries live.

But, I do forget to take the batteries out right away. I do see it fairly often since my sunglasses sit at the same spot. Life goes on.

I have an old trustfire charger along with newer xtar chargers. I used the trustfire back when my batteries were 1500 mAh types. The trustfire will work I guess, but mine just doesn't ever turn green (or whatever color it uses) to show a full charge on the newer higher capacity batteries. Frankly, I don't use it but keep it around as a backup.
