E-Cigs a Hot Topic at Seattle Nicotine Powwow - ECF InfoZone [Gary Cox re: the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) conf. in Seattle talks about Neal Benowitz (opponent of harsh anti-vaping regulations), Stanton Glatz (esp. his claim that partial cessation is of little value - ergo "dual use" is an argument against PVs), and Natalie Walker, author of recent study in The Lancet indicating that PVs are marginally better than the patch for cessation. Also mentions Benowitz panel w/ Miaciej Goniewicz - author of Rosewell Park Cancer Inst. study below on "thirdhand smoke". For more on Glantz's claim that partial cessation doesn't lower risk, see C.V. Phillips: One advantage of truth over lies: it seldom contradicts itself | Anti-THR Lies and related topics - see 3rd para.]

I declare today to be "thirdhand PV 'smoke' fear day." Just because ... as far as I know, today is the first day that a PV study regarding "thirdhand smoke" (is it "smoke??") got released (?).

So-o, now the media is going to be mixing up results from "thirdhand smoke" due to tobacco and PVs. We've been through "secondhand" exposure, so it's only fair that we move on to The Third Degree of Torture-by-Mischaracterized-Junk-Science. Watch for this rationale to be used to justify bans on indoor vaping in any private indoor space which may be available for lease, even if it's a free-standing single-unit tenant-occupied structure.

[As you saw in this space last week, RPCI researchers were doing one study on "thirdhand smoke" from PVs which was presented Sat at the annual meeting of the SRNT (see above article by Gary Cox on the conf.). Study summarized as
"Three out of four experiments showed significant yet varying increases in nicotine found on the five surfaces. The floor and glass windows had the greatest increases in nicotine residue. Dr. Goniewicz and colleagues concluded that future research should explore the risks of exposure to carcinogens posed by third-hand exposure from e-cigarettes."(Is nicotine a carcinogen?)

Study #2 summarized as:
... labeling of nicotine content on e-cigarette refill solution was accurate in most cases. However, they also found e-cigarette packaging that may be misleading to consumers and can cause involuntary exposure to high doses of nicotine. One in four products differed in nicotine concentration by more than 20% from the value indicated on product labels. And nicotine was found to be present in some refill solutions labeled as nicotine-free.(This is the old canard that we've heard before: 0% e-juice from some vendors may have traces of nicotine. Media already has this one from '09 FDA).

I can't find any more info on the web, but we'll probably see Glantz and other ANTZ pick these up soon, and it will spread to media after that. Back in '09, Dr. Siegal wrote: http://tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.com/2009/01/thirdhand-smoke.html

Note that tobacco residue was used in this one, but don't expect the media to make any distinctions. Dr. Siegal predicted the result of the study, as did its author: http://tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.com/2014/02/uc-riverside-scientists-release-results.html ]

(Lewis & Clark College Portland OR US student paper) [No junk in this, but it was too priceless to omit: interview w/ Admin VP Ayres:
When asked who was most concerned about the problem with smoking, Ayres confirmed that most of the calls came from faculty. Although there have been calls about this issue, he said the board doesn’t know the risks or harm of these smoking devices yet.

Regarding the trend of banning electronic cigarettes among colleges and universities, Ayres explains:

"Most colleges and universities I have surveyed have prohibited the use of e-cigarettes just as they have cigarettes." [Policy rationale?]
