Hiya everyone,

Hope you can help me with my 2 questions/problems.

A bit of background: so I've been vaping for about half a year now, successfully quitting real tobacco (I was at 3 packs/day before switching). Occasionally I'd burn a tobacco stick or two, for nostalgic/social reasons.

So I got 2 questions:

1. I almost always got runny nose after switching to vapes. I can understand if this happened only in the transitional times from tobacco to vapes, but I still got it after 6 months. I'm not exhaling through the nose. Is this an allergic reaction or something?

2. This might be better placed in the e-liquid sub, but I thought I'll ask this here anyway. So recently I bought some new brand of juices. I kinda like it. Problem is, this juice blackens my cotton and coils very fast. 2-3 redrips of the juice on my RDA, and the cotton is almost completely black, and I think my coil got more gunk on it. The cotton wasn't singed, and I got no dry hits. What's causing this? The essence? Low quality PG/VG?

Thank you in advance

1. Even if you don't consciously exhale through your nose, some of the vapor will get stuck in your sinuses. In my experience, I have gotten similar symptoms of a runny nose from a cold, but it was due to the VG in the vapor. Snot a problem though :D:D:D:D:D

2. Some juices that are darker in color can gunk up coils pretty quick. Even if the juice is pretty clear, any sweetener (or sweet tasting juice) will cause the coils to gunk up, and sometimes discolor pretty quick. Nicotine will change the color of a juice due to the basic chemical reaction when exposed to air.

How sure are you that you aren't exhaling through the nose? I never knew until I started doing reviews, when I exhaled it would come out both my nose and mouth at the same time without meaning to do it.

Typically sweeter juices will gunk up coils faster. Pretty much what Liskrig said for this one.

When I go for finding the flavor, I always exhale through the nose.

I switch between nose and mouth usually. Since I have a kid, I'm not that into blowing clouds at home, so holsing it in for a couple secs and exhaling through the nose pretty much eliminates the clouds.

Yea, the main problem is the snot actually....

I mean even when I don't have a cold, I gotta blow my nose regularly (not too often, thankfully). Sometimes it got to the point that it's a bit hard to breathe, due to full tank in my nose :D

Maybe it's because the vapor is high humidity or something?

I didn't mix the juice myself. It's just a new brand that I bought, so I don't really know what kind of essence (or any other stuffs) they used. I bought 3 flavors, and all of them did the same thing, blackening the cotton and coil.

So I take it that the blackening cotton is considered normal, and only caused by (maybe) too much sweetener in the essence they used? I stopped using the juices when I saw the blackening, afraid that it may indicate hazardous stuffs. Maybe I'll start using it again :)

PG and VG can make your nose run, yes, this is natural, sinuses are being cleared, overly excessive runny nose is probably due to a high VG juice. The vapor hangs and lingers around your eyes though you do not see it, irritates the eyes, causing more tears. Secondly I got this bit of information when working clean rooms at Intel and Motorola when I was still smoking, even though you finish smoking/vaping in this instance, that vapor and pollutants is exhaled for well over another half hour after you finish the last puff. On the PG side, many formulas of albuterol (asthma and such) in breathing inhalers help by loosening up air passage restrictions so helps clear sinuses as well. If the vapor is plugging you up instead of clearing up your sinuses, might be an allergy to any of the ingredients that needs to be addressed, PG or VG and the food flavorings (mainly PG based) could be compounding things, I'd generally suggest trying an unflavored in your preferred nic and PG/VG ratio, after a few days, still issues, elliminate the PG entirely, after couple days just unflavored VG nic juice still issues, flip the VG for full PG juice, gradual process of elimination, also consult your family physician, especially if they specialize in internal medicine and/or allergy specialist.

Second issue, overly dark liquids, tobaccos, highly sweet liquids, high VG liquids, deserts, savory flavors, coffees, milky, creamy flavorings, all of these types of liquids are known coil gunkers, hotter you go, quicker they gunk stuff up, lighter, clearer, less sweet liquids coils last the longest with these. If after only a few drippings your coils are gunking up black, I suspect there is a lot of sucralose or other sweetener in the liquid, maybe try diluting it down 50/50 or 30flavored/70unflavored liquid to lower the crystalization of these sweeteners will dull it down but should help.
