My random observations, idiosyncrasies, advice, gripes etc. after about 1 year as a vaper:

1) I heartily wish that we (everyone) would stop talking about "smoking our e-cigs". It's patently obvious that the association of PVs/vaping with cigarettes/smoking is doing far more harm than good. The concept of sustaining a nicotine addiction via reduced/managed harm, combined with the illusion of "smoking", is baffling enough for most non-vapers, smokers and non-smokers alike. We confuse the issue further with language that links vaping with smoking.

2) Direct dripping all the way! If I was to do it all over again, I would simply buy an eGo with a drip tip and a pass-through attachment, and that would be my advice to anyone starting out.

3) Addiction is intensely personal and responses to switching from smoking to vaping are hugely variable depending on individual circumstances. That said; IMO if you really want to have a cigarette, just do it. Buy a pack if you feel that you need to. Beating yourself up for "falling off the wagon" is buying into the guilt-ridden, "all or nothing" mindset and I think it's counter-productive. Just keep vaping and bear in mind how much less you're smoking now than you used to, and how much better vaping tastes.

4) I never intended to quit smoking. In fact, my major motivation for vaping in the first place was that I was so sick of being treated like a third-class citizen as a smoker. I *loved* the idea of being able to vape whenever and wherever I wanted to. That paid off in spades and everything else (improved senses of taste and smell, better CV endurance, the fact that niquid tastes far better than smoke) is icing.

5) I'd rather switch than fight.

Thank you.

Come to think of it, there are a couple more points:

6) After a year of vaping, I can absolutely attest to the health benefits of making the switch. This time last year I was really starting to feel the effects of smoking, to the point where I had trouble breathing in certain positions (even just lying flat on my back for more than a few minutes). There was a tightness in my chest when I took a deep breath. I never had the "morning cough" but I was pretty much resigned to a chronic runny nose, especially in the summer allergy season.

All of these symptoms literally vanished within a few weeks of my switching to vaping.

Sure - but...

Everything is just personal opinion and there are a thousand variations. Part of the beauty of vaping, you might say. Lots more ways to go than with the cancer sticks. For example (IMO!!):-

2) Direct dripping all the way! If I was to do it all over again, I would simply buy an eGo with a drip tip and a pass-through attachment, and that would be my advice to anyone starting out.

Not for me and a lot of other people too. There are dozens of 'types' of vapers, whatever floats your boat - cart users, in-cart mixers, bought-in carto users, carto refillers, drip-tip drippers, empty-cart drippers, tailpipers, and more. For me, nothing beats carts, and in-cart mixing when I get bored. For others - who knows...

3) Addiction is intensely personal and responses to switching from smoking to vaping are hugely variable depending on individual circumstances. That said; IMO if you really want to have a cigarette, just do it. Buy a pack if you feel that you need to. ......

Agreed. But maybe going to roll-ups is a better way, you reduce the crud you're taking in, and reducing everything else as well, probably. Worth thinking about anyway.

Thanks for sharing your story! I'll be looking forward to Oct 2011 for my 1 year anniversary.

A little comment on e-cig vs PV vs smoke vs vape. I'm a smoker and was looking for alternatives. I saw "electronic cigarette" in one of the flying-travelling forums and led me to do research on this. If they had used the word ie. vape, nic inhaler or something along that line.. i probably wouldn't know or would have not been interested. But that's from a smoker point of view. I understand where ur coming from and the negatively nonsmokers have around "smoking" and "cig".

Even with my short experience vaping, I've noticed that I didn't realize how labored my breathing was. After 20+ years of smoking, it all creeps up on you . . . you can't breathe.

Last night I realized that I was breathing, and it was soft and fluid. My breaths weren't as deep, but felt more satisfying because I wasn't having to breath in as deeply to get oxygen. I love it!

Congrats on the one year! Im only a few days away from my one year myself (and love my 510 carts with proper PTB set up) but whatever works is all that really counts. A year ago I could not breathe and found myself in the ER more than a few times because of Asthma. Now I can out run most of my friends and I smell like strawberry, lol.
