Ok so, with my OCD in full force, I've researched, read and watched (youtube) tons of tutorials, been all over this forum on multiple topics, and still not sure on exactly what to buy to start out with. Is 30g Kanthal and 3mm wicks the best starting point?

Background... The wife and I started vaping just shy of a month ago. We both got EVOD starter kits. These came with the longer (protank) style atty heads. Naturally, since we have between us 12 heads total, I'd like to rebuild them rather than buy new. Granted all we've vaped on thus far are the stock 2.5Ω heads on the stock 3.7v batteries. I suspect 2.2 or 2.0Ω head will give me just that wee bit more vape that I want, and I'll be satisfied for quite some time. My wife may be a different story. I'll explain below.

Having gone to school for electronics years ago, all the stuff surrounding Ohm's law, and voltage, wattage, resistance, would be right up my alley, but I'm pretty darn sure my wife would NOT want to mess with VV/VW, etc. She needs to just press the button and vape. She'd sooner go back to stinkies than mess with a spinner, and finding the right voltage, etc. So, looking to rebuild coils in the 1.8-2.2Ω range that'll work for both of us with the same set of supplies.

I should mention that while I enjoy long slow draws, with mouth to lung hits, my wife seems to just puff, much like a cig. (I'm assuming this would be a direct lung inhale) So, she needs something that'll fire quickly.

All that said, here's the meat and potatoes of my question...
What size of wick and what gauge of kanthal should I buy to start out rebuilding my coils?
I was thinking of 30gauge with 3mm wick to start out.

I'm going to try starting out with Silica first because if I ever decide to switch to cotton, it's as easy as a $3 trip to CVS right around the corner. That said, is the Ecowoll better than just regular Silica wick? Also, with 3mm wick what size drill bit would be best to wrap my coils around?

I know there's a ton of topics, and tutorials out there. I've been obsessing over them for like 3 days. I guess what I'm asking is: What is the best starting point? If someone knows that there is definitely a better starting point than 30gauge Kanthal, and 3mm wick, please let me know, and why.

Any help greatly appreciated as always!

that didnt answer your question very well, lets see...

1.I was thinking of 30gauge with 3mm wick to start out.
gauge wire is up to you, 28 gauge is known to produce really good flavor in the protanks/evods,
30 gauge works too, i started with 32, and quickly worked my way to 28g.
I used 2mm ecowool at 1st, 3mm pretty big for the area you have, choke off juice flow.

2. is the Ecowoll better than just regular Silica wick?
I used ecowool just because it was hollow braided, that way i could put a blunt needle inside the
ecowool, wrap it, pull the needle out. That way my wraps werent too tight, choking off juice flow.
Cotton is so much easier to work with and flavor is cleaner so thats where I ended up.

We all go on our vaping journey a lil different, experiment an enjoy. With the protanks and evods the trick for me was finding the right amount of wicking material so I didnt get dry hits, but not too much were it floods.

Thanks for the replies, monkey! So, you're saying 2mm is better, because I'd basically end up Stuffing my head with the 3mm stuff, is what I got from your reply, correct?

I don't want to get the ohms too low, because if I'm pulling too many watts, I'd be afraid one battery wouldn't last an 8 hour shift at work. I'm a Prison Guard, and I'm lucky thus far, that they haven't banned the e-cigs at work yet, so I ain't trying to push the issue taking Multiple batteries into work, or worse yet, some kind of mod. The wife would probably be able to get away with an 1100mah battery at work (Eyeglass store) in her lap coat pocket, but Me, I'd have to go with what fits in a shirt pocket and is discrete, hence the stock 650mah battery. So, that's why I'm trying to stay around 2ohms. Get what I mean?

I have been rebuilding my PT heads for a about a month now and I was really nervous at first so I had some spare new heads to use just in case. I have tried both 28g and 30g Kanthal. I personally prefer the 30g right now cause I have been having trouble getting the 28g to heat up quick enough (may be a personal preference thing). 8 wraps of 30g measures out to about 1.8 ohms on my vamo v3 wicked with organic cotton and have never looked back to silica.

My advice as far as wire goes is to get some of both 28g and 30g and just see what works for you, Especially if you have a couple of days off of work that you can mess with it. It takes some experimentation to figure out which you like. This site is a good tool for figuring out how much wire and how many wraps it will take to get to your desired resistance. Steam Engine
