im trying to use a UD coiling tool to wrap this kanthal wire and it just makes a big pancake....is it at all possible to use a coiler with wire this springy or am i better off just handcoiling?

After you've got the first wrap on just let off the pressure a little to allow the wire to sit down next to the first wrap, once the second wrap seats in next to the first you can apply pressure again

Like the Eel above said, you are putting too much pressure on while winding, it takes a while to get the feel of it.
Pressure in on the first wrap, then just roll the top of the jig, if anything pull away just a little bit. The smaller wire is trickier for sure!

Yep. Finer gauges can be extremely frustrating. Going along with what SLIPPY said, I find that I can occasionally get 30 gauge to coil properly if I wrap one coil, then sort of lightly pull out on the shorter part of the jig while doing subsequent wraps. It doesn't always work, and I don't know why. I've tried hand wrapping, too, and I'm pretty horrible at it. I'm sure I could improve with practice, but I generally run my coils at .3-1.5 ohms, depending upon device, so using really small gauge wire isn't a necessity.

Thanks for the tips…I usually don't use a lot of pressure to begin with…Ive always thought that if I let go the slack, the wire will unravel. I usually torch the wire and straighten it out before coiling….it is just too springy.

So I tried again….went real slow this time with minimal pressure…let the screw do all the work….gave me a nice micro coil….wasnt perfect but no pancake either. Practice is the key i guess.
