I have read a few places that the m401 is the "slightly cheaper" version of the 306, how true is this? and if so, how can i tell which one i have? i bought a branded e-cig and i was pretty sure it was a 306 until i happened across a video of someone with an m401, i noticed that it looked exactly the same in all the components, but didnt produce a lot of vapor. Any tips on telling the difference? the supplier i purchased from doesnt offer replacement parts for my unit, so it would be great to know what to look for when the time comes to get some spares.

It's not true at all. The "306" is probably the Joye306, made by joyetech. The M401 is made by a different manufacturer called Smoore. Price wise, they are probably about the same.

The M401 has a male connector on the battery, and the Joye 306 has a female connector on the battery. In my experience, an M401 produces a middling amount of vapour, has a fairly hard draw but good throat hit and taste. I've not used a Joye 306.

Pic below of some M401 batteries showing the connector:

The 306 is based on the 510 platform. In fact the parts are interchangeable. Just picture a super-mini 510 with an exposed atty. Joye and Smoore are both quality manufacturers and you can't go wrong with either product.

EDIT -- This is an observation of the two models. The 306 produces more vapor, but the M401 has a longer battery life.

I am a fan of the exposed atomizer. So the 306 fits 510 batteries? Same as the Janty mini-fogger, correct? They don't seem very common these days. Anyone know of a good source for 306 atomizers (or since I have a pretty stocked supply of other parts these days a good source with cheap shipping and/or really good juice I should try)?
