Hmm... thought it was the adapter to the manual batt causing the problem. After reading your post I put the meter to it, my problem is on the atty end, just can't get it tight enough. Managed to get one 510 atty to work (played hell getting it apart). Will have to get a replacement.
I haven't had that problem on regular batts but I do have a bit of a problem with the adapter on the Chameleon - it's a compression type adapter where the center post isn't in the right place - too long on the switch side where you can see a bit of a gap and too short of the atty side where no or little contact is made - sometimes it's just the juice making the contact ;-) I used the staple mod for a temp solution but I have to send it back BUT the 510 to carto adapter 'on top of' the compression adapter does make the connection.
Steve at PS 'fixes' the problem of the varying connections of attys by extending the center post in his connection toward the atty end and while you do end up with a slight gap in the threads, every atty makes full connection and it is not a bad broad shoot to make that center poll connection a tad over spec.
So I'm still sending the Chameleon adapter back in eventually and would advise anyone with an adapter with the same problem, that isn't making the connection, to do so, but the staple mod does make it work.
Pretty sure you'd know this one but for those that don't:
