The asterisk means that you have selected to be invisible - that is to say, that you don't want anyone to see if you are online or not.

You must have selected this option in your userCP: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/for...do=editoptions

Also, if you see a + sign by anyone's name, this means that they are in your friends list....

Nope, that's a different symbol. The OP is talking about in the avatar. For example, your's would be:
