While I await my li-ion batts/charger, I've been practicing (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/battery-mods/49142-simple-5v-mod-510-a-3.html#post760947 )

So, on the heels of my 1st success, I decided to try one using a 4xAA box using 3 fully-charged NiMH batts (just for testing purposes)...

I removed the double contact from the opposite end of the box from the switch, moved the contact w/red wire to the 2nd slot where I'd just removed the double contact, drilled my holes, installed my button/atty, soldered/wired it up just the same as the one I made yesterday, made sure the on/off switch was in the on position, attached my atty...it doesn't work.

At first, I thought it might be that I had a lot of solder inside of the 510 connector and it was causing it to ground out, so I took it apart, melted the solder, slung it out, and re-attached the lead to the center post (only a little dab of solder this time)...still didn't work.

DH said maybe the switch was bad, so I swapped that out as well...still didn't work.

Said screw it and started over with a new box thinking the on/off might have been bad or I broke something tinkering with the first one...still doesn't work.

I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sherry

You can get them for 8 or $10 at stores like Harbor Freight, but Lowes and Home Depot are much more, around $30. I recently picked up an inexpensive meter at walmart. In the electrical section. It was $17 or $18, made by GE. A decent little meter for less then $20. Try there.

Edit- Make sure the meter has digital readout.

OK...I didn't reconnect the atty or the switch. When everything is in place/soldered, it's wired just like my other box, which I suppose is "standard" for a simple box mod...

  • I removed the double contact where I put the hole for the atty
  • I moved the single contact w/red wire to where you see it.
  • That wire was then connected to the end of the switch (RS 275-1547) nearest my hand.
  • I attached a shorter piece of red wire I had soldered to the center of the atty to the other side of the switch.
  • Lastly, I ran the black wire to the outside of the atty
I assumed it would work as my other one did, but it doesn't.

I still don't have a tester, but if you can see anything wrong with this, please let me know.

Thanks,

Sherry

that all looks and sounds right. Unfortunately we're back to the fact you need a meter to test further. could be poor contact or dodgy switch. one way you test without a meter is to use something that runs off 3.6 volts and hold the wires onto the contacts where the battery would go (of the test item not the mod box) straight from the battery terminals. if thats ok then add the switch into the circuit and try again. this will only help to see if there is voltage present.
Get a meter and you will wonder how you ever thought you could manage without one :)
Good luck

Chris

Edit
You could use your existing mod to test also by removing the batteries from it and hold/connect the wires from the new one to the switch and see it it fires the atty

It did fire the atty on the box I made last night! I changed the switch in the new box and voila! It works!

Gotta get me a meter and learn how to use it...

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi HippyGirl, I can see you have melted the soder off the on-off switch.

I did get this one to work and have since gutted it and put the box back for future use. As soon as I get my 2nd batch of li-ions and new connectors (which hopefully will be tomorrow), I'm going to do a 5V box for an 801 atty with "proper" batts.

TRUST ME...I'll be back!

Thanks for your comment, though! :D
