I've had my 510 about 2 months now. Its been fine up until about 2 weeks ago when i noticed one of the cartridges got melted at the top a bit. I had gotten 2 new atomizers. I then noticed that another cartridge melted slightly, its happened with both atomizers. Has anyone else had this happen? I've been keeping the cartridges slightly out of the atomizer to try to prevent this.

It happens when the cart gets a bit too dry or the atty a bit too hot (frequent vaping). You could file or sand the cart down a bit, but its just a little deformation. I don't let it bother me.

the deformation is not really what bothers me, its more the smoking of plastic. LOL

I do frequently vape, so basically this is normal if the cart gets too dry? it was with brand new attys. but I've never seen it before.

Using a mod?

Regardless... Check the bridge inside the atty. If it isn't centered, move it gently to center (I use a plastic pen cap, the plastic pointy part that clips on a pocket).

The heat transfer when they're crooked can melt carts but most likely it is also hitting it too much and/or too long of a draw.

If an atty is too warm to put against your bottom lip, you should give it a rest. I find when I'm at the computer, I vape too much, lol.

Two things you can do;
Of course, always make sure you have plenty of juice, and that the wicking bedding in your cart is in contact with the bridge of your atty.

Using a hobby knife, you can carefully trim about 1/8'' off the end of
your cart (the end that is close to the atty).

Also, if you are using a high volt (and sounds like you are) PV, try stitching to a HV atty.

I have melted several 510 carts on 5V PV's but still prefer to use them over the 3.4 ohm attys because I get better vapor production.
I just have to be careful not to let it get too hot and only press the button down a few seconds.
If you have a 6V PV, you almost NEED to use a HV atty because the 2.2 ohm ones will fry!!

I think it happens a lot more than Mik_Janty wants to acknowledge. I don't worry too much about it. I don't remember if it happened with my stock 510 batteries, but I use a 3.7V mod, and several of my carts have melted edges. It doesn't actually seem burnt, so I'm not worried about inhaling plastic smoke or anything like that. I don't taste or smell any burning plastic. It's probably a good idea to replace old carts once in a while anyway.

I found the really good way to trim off the burnt part of the cartridge. Fingernail clippers! Works like a champ for me. Just go easy on all four sides till you get it pretty even all the way around. Use a good pair of fingernail clippers though. If the blades on them are dull, get a new pair! I tried the file method...to much scraping afterwards. IMO this works better! My old carts are new again. Of course you can't trim too much off of them.....JB

Little "mouse bites" are fairly normal, everything bigger than that, I'd say something isn't quite right. Have you very simply checked whether you vape slowly enough? Because a friend recently ran into the same problem, he actually managed to melt half a cart. The reason: He always smoked his analogs burning hot, too. And while at the beginning of his vaping carreer he had remembered to vape slowly, stress at work, vaping like he used to smoke -> half-melted cart.

The atty's on the left I think NEVER have that problem.
If you have a genuine atty, like the one on the right, It could be because they work so well with normal voltage that they may melt the cart.

You can try to straighten the wick, like Helen said, or if it is already straight and still melting, align it as in the picture. (rectangle to rectangle)

Quite right, I have never melted any carts using the round style atty on the left as opposed to the rectangular on the right. No alignment required.
