clean that atty. Some people with similar issues use alternate cart stuffing, or a drip tip or a cartomizer. luckily with the 510 you have those options. Sometimes a new atomizer is the best remedy as well. My original 510 kit had some real bad atomizers, and more recent aquisitions have proved to be better. Try and stay away from atomizers that look like there is a washer under the bridge.

How long have you had it and how long have you been using the same cart stuffing?

I use a different PV but I find my atty burns hot when it's not getting enough liquid which is caused by one of...
1 - not enough liquid in the cart
2 - cart stuffing not contacting atty well
3 - cart stuffing not wicking well (like after I use white stuffing for 4-5 days)
4 - atty needs cleaning
5 - maybe battery is weak and about to run out so I am trying to hard

The solutions to all of those are obvious except maybe #3 - when the white stuffing gets tired I switch it to blue foam stuffing. You can buy cheap precut pieces for 510/901 at strictlyejuice.com and if you like the blue foam and are ready to cut your onw, you can but the uncut as Marineland Rite-size U Foam Sleeve in the aquarium dept of Petsmart.

Re cleaning the atty - there are various ways. Every weekend I soak in plain vodka overnight (edible grain alcohol would be better and purer). When I put it in my jar of vodka I make sure all air bubbles are out of the atty and swish it around a bit. At this time I usually switch to my other atty which is clean and dry. next day I take the wet one out of alcohol after swishing it around and scooping some alcohol into it and letting it flow thru to rinse out any dissolved gunk. Then i shake it out well and lay to dry on paper towels until I need it the next weekend. If you needed it right away you could blow through it until it is nice and dry inside or use a blow dryer.

You could also have a badly made or off-brand atty - does your bridge look off-center? Because that could be troublesome, And do you line your carts up with the atty like this? That's supposed to be the best way to avoid melting the cart but if your bridge is closer to one side it could be too close to the cart plastic?

If it's the cart itself that's melting (as in the actual plastic) are you putting it in the right way? The long part of the cart should be lining up with the coil. Look closely at your atty, you will see the silver mesh (bridge) a little bit of wick and a small white cup with a coil of wire in it.
Don't let any part of the cart plastic cross that coil.
If you do a google search for "how to line up a 510 cart" you should find some pictures in the first link
