The only commercially available 5V mods (at the moment) are the Prodigy V2, Xhaler and GLV. There are a couple more on the way. Unless you want to build your own, the best way to try out 5V vaping is with a 5V passthrough. Several sites offer them, but you have to be careful and make sure you use a USB power supply that can handle at least 2 amps.

An inexpensive passthru or box mod like the one linked above does sound like a good option for testing out whether you like 5V (maybe the passthru would be best between them, since it would continue to serve an additional unique purpose even if you did also get one of the popular 5V mods later).

If you do end up wanting one of those more high-end 5V mods, myself I can vouch for the GLV. The ergonomics are great with the button located underneath the connector end of your atty or carto, in perfect, natural reach of your thumb.

It is a really good idea to learn about this kind of battery technology before making a purchase (especially if you are using 5 or 6v since you run them in tandem). They're great IF you know what you are doing (charging, storage, how to safely carry a spare and checking them with a multi-meter), what to look for (when one is going bad) and what can happen if you don't handle them correctly or identify when one is having a problem while you are using it (boom!).

Better safe than sorry!

Candre and Mia make a good point. A 5v passthrough is a great way to test the waters and see if you (and your atomizers) can handle 5v. After getting mine, I decided on single battery 3.7v mods and use the passthrough here and there (I have one in the car and one by my computer).

Good points, and then there are other new considerations coming into play such as that many ppl are finding they don't like any of the new premium-type cartos (exact model names vary by supplier) at higher voltages. Even if they did like standard cartos at HV. So if you're a carto user or may want to be, that could also pose complications, because it may be possible that regular standard cartos will be phased out eventually...

Oh and also re the USB passthru, make sure your computer can handle it; may want to get a self-powered USB hub!

I am a carto user and I like the premiums but I've found that I do like the performance of a passthrough, I hate the cord. That's the reason I'm looking for something else.

I got a 5v PT and also a USB/AC adapter wallplug (madvapes both items) to try out 5v vaping and I must say I do enjoy it - but not all my juices enjoy it. The fruity ones TEND to prefer the 3.7v PT (my 901 also prefers the 3.7), and the other flavors i use (coffees, tobaccos, various sweet vapes from TV and others) are quite happy on my 510 at 5v.
This experiment is sort of pushing me to get something like an XHaler which offers both voltages in one fell swoop so Id only need the one mod. 6v vaping sounds a bit scary lol Im not sure Id be trying that one :)

The best 5v I ever owned. Unique and the button is in the right place. :)

Seriously considering this one too as I really want a regulated 5V that is easily pocketable (not too big and button not easily pressed) this one pretty much fits both. But, it just went up in price from $95 full kit - charger with 2 sets batteries - to $120 + $25 for charger with one set batteries.

The Buzz (variable/adjustable Vs) looks like an interesting device but don't know when it will be available.

Ankheperure: if you haven't done anything yet, you might check out the Joker (regulated 5V) offered at VaporTalk, Vaprlife and Dietsmokes (different colors at each). Their presentation is impressive but I am not loving that button. Looks easily activated in a pocket or anything close quarters (purse, soft-briefcase, backpack, etc). I am not sure but I think it may be the same button they use on their PT and that button has received less than stellar feedback.

So far, the Mod that rocks my boat the most is the GG Super Slim but NOT AT 7.4V!!!8-o That is one sweet and sexy mod and the lockable button looks awesome! if they would just find a way to reg it down to consistent 5V!! :hubba:

Anyone have a link for a well presented batts 101 overview as recommended above?

The full kits didn't used to be $95, for the 5V version anyway. That's been the price for the 5V body-only (i.e. no batts or charger) version. Still is for the GLV-1 which will be phased out; $110 now for the body-only GLV-2, which is a new design with some functional improvements.

Might want to recheck the full kit prices again too; those also vary depending on whether GLV-1 or GLV-2, but the increase for the latter is again only $15. (i.e., GLV-1 full kit = $120, GLV-2 = $135.) Full kit includes batts & charger of course and also an atty. Not sure what you mean about another $25, there shouldn't be any other $25 expenditures necessary if you get a full kit.

To keep costs down it may be best to just get a body-only one (which is actually still called a 'kit,' tho it probably shouldn't be IMHO, just leaves room for confusion lol), then get your own batts & charger at dealextreme or something.

Thanks Miss Mia,
Sounds like you ARE GLV! The price changed down $10. Every bit helps these days. The $95 came from a review and the "2 sets of batteries" came from Jay's youtube post. Still out for stock but can "pre-order". Any idea when they'll be "in stock" and ready for shipping?

I am new and have not yet researched batts and chargers, how do these compare to what is sold on dealextreme? Elsewhere? Saving a few dollars for seperate batts & charger may be nice but not if at risk. Given the recommendation (warning?) by Hellen A. in post #7 above, I have more research to do and that is why I asked if anyone has a link to a well written Batteries and Chargers educational overview post or site.

Cheers!

here are the only battys I use with my GLV. a couple of bucks more but well worth it. I have no safety concerns and have been using the GLV for almost a year since they first came out.
AW RCR123a Protected 750 mAh Battery

AWs fit the tube nicely and are the best battys around IMO..

the charger for them is listed on the same page..

Also I think they will be shipping GLVs with a week or two on all orders coming in now..

...what doots said. :) Only I was gonna use a lot more words, so you got lucky lol. (Love your new avatar btw, doots!)

FYI, AW also has a 'high drain' ('IMR') version of batts now (16340, which along with CR123 are compatible with the 5V GLV), which some say are better suited to the beating vaping gives them. Those are also available at lighthound, or cloudsofvapor.com. And, if you do want to look deeper into the charger aspect too, here are a couple posts I made recently about some multi chargers recommended by leading brainiacs.

^^ I edited it a bit cuz actually the IMRs are 16340 not CR123 lol. Dang this stuff. :p All still compatible of course tho. I got some of the IMRs and like them, tho it hasn't been long enough to judge yet if they're lasting longer (principle of course being that even tho listed mAh is pretty low, the fact that they're built for this kind of beating should at least level that field). But some think they'll also be safer due to their more appropriate characteristics.

Thanks so much! I'm not liking the button, either but it gives me more options.
