if you want to try and run your boxmod with only one cell then there are spacers made from Al that can be used in place of a second cell. you can buy them off ebay or you could even buy an Al rod from any home supply store(lowes/home depo) and cut it to size. totally safe as far as the batteries go.

Well as promised earlier this week I would get back to you on my progress with the battery situation, I used the 5v box mod in 4v config for most of the week with no problems with any battery heating issues, I flattened both batteries a couple of times during the week...So I can only say from my experiences and my 5v box mod that it seems to be safe to use it this way, having said that I have since got my E-Power switch working again (bought a new one) and now I don't need to run the 5v in 4v mode anymore.
But it was an interesting experiment while it lasted, I'm glad I satisfied my curiosity - I just know I would have tossed & turned all night long if I didn't lol
