I'm not exactly the best at writing so bear with me I'll attempt not to drag this out too terribly long but there is kind of a lot of history surrounding my first couple of attempts to quit smoking and what I hope is continued success.
I started smoking around the age of 16 and smoked somewhere around a pack to a pack and a half a day for about five years before my initial attempt to quit smoking with vaping.
At the time vaping technology was not near what it is today. I started off with a Blu Cigalike I picked up from a gas station near my home. I remember enjoying the hell out of it at the time but not enough to completely give up the cigs. A few months later I ended up with an ego style device, which was better but still not really cutting it. So I transitioned to building my own coils and using mech mods. At the time regulated mods where limited to 15w max output and I was more into larger clouds and less nicotine as it was much smoother than using 18mg at 12 watts. I quit smoking at some point and continued dripping on mechs for quite some and eventually transitioned to a 100w regulated mod when they started being more affordable.
At the time sub ohm tanks didn't even really exist, and I became a bit annoyed with dragging a leaky RDA and a hand full of batteries around with me everywhere I went. I had just gotten a new job where I was inside most of the day, so rather than being able to puff on my mod whenever I wanted I was confined to a couple of 10 minute breaks. No matter what I did I couldn't seem to get enough nic during my breaks, and working in a diner everyone in the kitchen smoked. Eventually I went back to smoking, and sadly I continued to smoke for another three years.
It wasn't until I joined a local band as a guitarist and vocalist that I realized how much damage I was doing to myself by smoking. Most nights with the band I would go through a pack of smokes in a four hour practice, so I was smoking anywhere between two and three packs a day on practice nights. I started realizing how crusty sounding my voice was and how out of breath I was after what used to be a cake walk for me as a vocalist.
In my time with the band I was never able to fully quit, though I did cut back fairly dramatically for a short time. I ended up getting a job that was much more physically demanding and started smoking like a locomotive again I assume partially due to the stress of a new job. After about a month at the new job I started having extreme difficulty breathing at times to the point I would have to stop for a solid 10 minutes several times a day just to catch my breath. So one day I decided I was done smoking.
I didn't exactly quit smoking right away, but I dug up my vape gear and bought my first sub ohm tank and some juice from a local vape shop the day I decided to quit. I cut back on my smoking dramatically over the course of a week and stopped entirely in about ten days.
And here I am, no longer a smoker. I've relapsed a few times, mostly while drinking, but I've continued to chose vaping over smoking every time. I have had to increase my nicotine consumption somewhat to avoid cigarettes but I am once again feeling satisfied with vaping. I can breathe better, I can sing better, I can work harder, and I don't smell like crap anymore!
