Hi All,

I've only been properly vaping for 8 days but my life has changed quicker than I ever could have hoped, and the support I've had on this forum has been invaluable.

In this rather long post I'm going to give a run down of my observations after 8 days. Hopefully it will help / inspire some "noobs" like myself, and I'd also be grateful for any feedback from the old hands.

MY SETUP: Curve 2 (iStick) 20w - now have two! Lots of tanks, some TECC and a couple of Aspire nautilus Minis.

FAVOURITE LIQUIDS SO FAR: Space Jam Eclipse for tobacco. DV Orangella (with a little Lime Zinger) has been my All Day Vape so far, but some El Diablo Passion Bomb came today and I think it's going to become a big part of my life! Dessert flavour: Boom Juice Raspberry Custard. All 12mg or thereabouts.

PREVIOUS SMOKING HABIT: Anything from 7 to 30 Marlboro Lights per day, depending on whether I was at home working or out on the town.

SMOKING HABIT NOW: 1.5 over the weekend, none at all in the last two days :) I'm staggered by this, and so is my wife!

VAPING HABITS: Not chain vaping by any means. Averaging 4 or 5 daily "sessions" of 10-20 minutes. More when I drank alcohol on Sunday! I usually have my mod set between 3.7 and 4.3 V.

OBSERVATIONS:

1. I actually dare to hope this quit attempt might work this time. I've tried eCigs before several times: Blu Disposables, some nasty PCC thing with pre-filled carts I bought when I lived in Portugal, and a basic eGo stick. None worked as well as what I have now. Actually none lasted more than a day!

2. Obviously I still have cigarette cravings, but hardly any already - and I was a really committed smoker. The cravings are manageable, and I've even put myself to the test by deliberately weakening my resolve with alcohol!

3. SIDE EFFECTS: Surprisingly few. I do seem to get a bit of a headache with some liquids, think it's the PG heavy ones - I am trying to stay hydrated. Not too concerned because cigs gave me a headache sometimes too. I also seem to have indigestion - don't know if that's down to vaping or quitting smoking, but I keep feeling short of breath, then finding out I actually just need a large burp! My lungs do seem to be gradually clearing out, which is good but not the most pleasant thing in the world!

Also (TMI alert) - my digestive system seems far more well behaved than usual!

4. My sense of smell is back with a vengeance. Cutting into a lemon whilst cooking on Sunday smelled heavenly.

5. Everything feels kind of surreal. I smoked for 25 years, and my longest quit attempt lasted 8 days. I think this is compounded by a slightly lightheaded feeling caused by my getting more oxygen!

6. My 15 month old son has been a bit strange around me a couple of times. I never smoked around him but I think I it may be because I now smell wrong!

7. I want tobacco tasting juices way less than I thought I would, but they are still a God-send when i do have cravings. I think they will remain my go-to flavours for drinking too, unless anyone can recommend something that goes better with beer than the taste of tobacco!

8. I've learned a lot about how to actually "vape." I wonder if I may have had more success with my eGo if I'd not tried to "smoke" it like a cigarette. Learning all this has been really key for me.

9. I now know that a lot of the initial frustrations re. leaks, burned coils etc. are down to learning what you're using. I've had a couple of "disasters," such as over tightening a Nautilus tank, but they have really been down to my lack of knowledge.

10. I can actually visualise future events (i.e. Xmas with family) and see myself vaping and not smoking. This is HUGE, as I've never been able to do this before.

All in all, I'm very pleased with myself, but not nearly as pleased as my wife is!

Would appreciate any feedback, especially on the "side effects" bit. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac so the last thing I want to do is put myself off vaping with silly health worries!

Thanks for reading :)

Congratuations on discovering "real vaping".:)

I wouldn't be too concerned about the side effects you describe. De-toxing from tobacco and smoke can in itself cause a multitude of side effects, some good and some not so good. I think that you are discovering that vaping is a better alternative to your nicotine addiction.

Nicotine addiction is more than just a physical addiction to nicotine. The smoking behaviors (the hand to mouth action, holding a cigarette in your hand as a security blanket, the physical act of the inhaling/exhaling action into your lungs) are just as much a part of the dependence.

It may take some experimentation on your part to see if the 12 mg nic concentration is what's best for your individual needs. If you are only vaping 3 - 4 times a day for 20 minute episodes each, it may take more or less nicotine to satisfy your urges. Your body will generally let you know if you're getting enough nicotine. Too much may cause the symptoms of too much caffeine - headache, lightheadedness, nausea or upset stomach, jitters or nervousness, difficulty sleeping, etc. Many people have a hypersensitivity to Pg, and do better with a higher Vg ratio.

I still recall a life-changing moment about a month into starting vaping. I had just walked outside of my home to my car, after a recent rainfall. I was stopped in my tracks by the wonderful smell of nature after a rainfall. I hadn't experienced that aroma in over 30 years. My sense of smell was returning, and I had to just stand there and smell that for a few minutes.

Glad to have you here and continued great success.

Congrats @bennytuk ! Welcome to the sanity. I didn't have any of the side effects, but you might read this thread. It doesn't sound like you're having any issues.

A list of symptoms when quitting tobacco and changing to an ecigarette | E-Cigarette Forum

The only "unusual" issue I had was a small bout of insomnia. To correct it all I had to do was to vape a lower nic juice in the hours before bed, as nicotine is somewhat of a stimulant. It doesn't happen to everyone.

I've lowered my nic down to 3 or less now so I have no issues being without vape for long periods or trouble sleeping.

Great to hear you're doing well.

It's amazing isn't it? I'm six weeks in and am still looking for the catch. But there may not be one..I think we are quitting. We are actually quitting.

Congrats on your success thus far!! I too was thrilled with the quick changes after smoking for about 21 years. I started vaping by the suggestion of my doctor since I was having major congestion and asthma issues. I completely quit smoking the day after I bought my set-up.

Within one week...I stopped losing my voice multiple times a day. My sinuses started to clear. Within two weeks...I could smell better and even hear better. I did not realize this until my husband pointed it out. I guess all the sinus drainage from smoking was really taking a toll on my hearing as well. I think my sense of taste started to return around this point as well. Within the first month....my hoarseness had almost completely disappeared, no more clearing my throat constantly. I could breath so much better, lungs felt "cleaner", and I stopped having to use even my rescue inhaler. I could walk up stairs without losing my breath. I have not had a sore throat since I quit either.

I also had some of the symptoms of quitting smoking such as mouth ulcers and my chest ached for about the first week. I have gained a around 3-4 pounds. I am hungry constantly - this has happened before so it may not even be related. I also had weird dreams for about the first two weeks, again this could have been totally unrelated. I think that there were a couple of other detox symptoms but they were apparently so minor that I can not remember then now :)

I am on day 45 and feel great. I am not having any odd side effects now and feel like I am in a good place. I have only had two real cravings, one about 10 days in and one a week ago when I drove a rather far distance.

Best of luck to you!!

Thanks all. Now tucked up in bed after another full day of no cigs.

Had 20 mins or so of tough cravings tonight, ended up frantically switching between the two tanks with tobacco juice in them to try to get a taste that pleased me but I "vaped through it" and was fine afterwards. Loving my quick "dessert" vape after dinner too (Raspberry Custard), which is becoming a bit of a ritual :)

Thanks again for all the support :)
