801 passthrough flashing

My 801 passthrough blinks 3 times after I draw, while sitting on my desk, when I pick it up, when I touch the wire, even when the atty is not connected to it. It still produces vapor on the first hit but not consistently.

The atty works fine on a battery.

Whats going on here and how do I fix it?

I had one that did what you describe and would turn on the LED on its own. It is FTD (fixin' to die). You have a few options. You could gut it and make a manual passthrough from it; you could order another one; you could build your own; you could buy the Puresmoker USBPass. I have done the first option several times, but the tactile buttons I was using wore out too quickly. The second option is a no go for me because all of these passthroughs don't seem to hold up well at all. I recently built a passthrough from scratch using copper pipe, copper pipe fittings and a better quality switch. A little clunky , but very durable and easy to repair. Lastly, the USBPass is a nice option for the non-DIY crowd. Puresmoker has put together a very durable looking device with options to purchase adaptors for different atomizers.

It should only blink three times when you first plug it in, so I suspect it isn't getting enough current from your USB port. Working fine on battery seems to back this up. But I'm not familiar with your particular pass through.

If you have a powered USB hub try plugging into that instead of the computer and see if that helps.

5volt @ 1amp is the best power for a passthorugh. Make sure it isn't starving for power before you go further.

I don't know what exactly the output of my puter's USB ports are but I tried it on several other puters and it does the same thing.

Do you think it may be cutting off and going back on again?

If it quits entirely I kinda like the idea of converting it to manual. Does this require more than just installing a switch? And just where would one get such a switch?

All USB 2.0 ports should output 5v; that is the industry standard. The highest output from a typical USB port is 500mA, but that can vary depending upon the device(s) connected to the computer. 1A of current is significantly better, though.

A straight, manual USB conversion would be as simple as running the black wire in a USB cable to the threads of the battery connector and the red wire to a tactile switch and then on to the center conductor of the battery connector. Tactil switches are available from Radio Shack and are a real buger to fit and secure in the little PT tube.
