[Twitch] - that's a sore one for me.

I'm not really ready to buy that there is any "self cleaning feature", but I should know beyond a doubt next week if all goes according to plan.

The switches have been known to stick or possibly bounce, so it's best to yoink the PT when not in use. That's just always good practice anyway for anything having hundreds of pounds of leverage at the end of a wire sticking out of a big square thing that wears a large "kick me" sign openly and pridefully. ;)

lol:hubba:

Thanks Leaford!
A couple a few more questions:
Is it sealed?
How long is the cord?
Will a wall charger with an output of DC 5 - 5.5 V / 1000 mA work?

Thanks!

Yes, it is sealed, the cord is about 3-4 feet (I don't have a tape measure handuy or I'd be more specific) with a flexible coil that adds another 6 inches to a foot and a half when extended, and a 1000ma adapter might work, but 2000ma would be better.

The manual has better reliability than the auto, longer-term, in general. (Although my original auto is still alive). The manuals are sealed, the autos aren't (due to the way the vacuum switch works). 5-5.5vDC from a wall unit will work at 1A as long as it _really_ is 1A and not 750mA with 1A scribbled on the back. In crayon. :)

Seriously, though, if it can really deliver 1A it's fine. I emphasize it because some don't, they're really 1A at thermal shutdown.

The manuals draw 1.2-1.4 amps, so I would recommend at least 1.5amps, personally. AmIwrong?

One more question I think.
Does the switch on this unit have that self cleaning feature?

And I will ask our engineer when he gets back from holiday.

Have you measured that current draw?

The autos I've measured are drawing between 480mA and 820ish-mA if you really warm 'em up. I had a chance to measure just one manual, and it was approximately the same, 500ish mA on the low end, never getting higher than 875mA (all @ 5v). I was powering them from a 24A bench supply, so they could source effectively whatever they wanted. I've not observed one cross 1A at any time. You have access, obviously, to the latest-and-greatest stuff. Are they drawing more now? If they're really drawing 1.5A they'd be shutting down most USB ports and would crush a USB 1.1 port.

Ok - we'll need to run with that. So realistically, 2.5A is the minimum power supply you'll want. [I'm not going to concede to being "wrong" in this case. When I get a new manual and see it, then I'll post an "I'm wrong", but right now, I can't reproduce it]

For sure don't plug them into a USB 1.1 - that'd be bad news.

This is my configuration, I can't afford to have anything happen to this laptop:
Laptop HP dv8000
Power supply iGo
input 100-240v 2A 50-60hz
output 15-24v 64w max

Nothing will happen to the laptop, per-se. The OS will crash and reboot in a worst case. In a less worse case, the USB will shut down (you'll hear the "duh-dunk" sound) for a minute or two, then it'll come back up.

Modern machines are protected with a "poly-fuse" against just such craziness - so no hardware damage.
