ok so i would say im a middleweight vapor. i have a couple of questions simply because it seems daunting to search for each & every question i have. ive tried that before & sometimes i get bits & pieces of info from more experienced users, but not a complete & direct idea of what im wanting to know. i hope this is ok:

1. so i read all the time about batteries (like the 18650) being dangerous. be careful, etc, etc.... but what can happen? what are the dangers of these high drain batteries?

2. i was wondering if i can buy %0nic juice & buy nic juice somewhere else & do some rudimentary mixing....i.e. fill my clearomizer with %0 juice & then add a drop of nic juice directly into it. is this unheard of? what about the percentage of nicotine in the juice?

3. cleaning tanks. ok so ive been using rubbing alcohol to clean my tanks...until reading the forum i found somewhere, someone saying they clean theirs with everclear alcohol. is this important? i thought %91 rubbing alcohol basically totally evaporates....

4. diketones. they are bad. i have started to solicit vendors that are listed in the diketone-free juice list. anyways, i read somewhere that you can avoid diketones simply by not going subohm. is this true?

p.s. it sucks i cant reply anywhere else to get clarification of experienced users' comments & quips.

cheers

1:
Thermal runnaway.
It's when battery puts out high current.
High current causes battery to get hot.
Hotter battery causes battery to put out higher current.
explosive.

2:
Easier to do that with an rda, like I do.
I got a 50ml needle bottle of my main base mix, and a 10ml bottle of 18mg boges raspberry that i bought yesterday. Squirt some of the main base in my rda, and maybe add 1 drop from the store bought liquid if necessary.

3:
I hardly clean my stuff; maybe a simple rinse.
But christmas time is my cleaning time; and when that time comes it's boiling hot water time.

1. Battery venting is a hot explosive reaction - YouTube it for the results of what happens.
2. Yeah you can do it that way or you can premix your nicotine into your juice.
3. Rubbing alcohol is fine, so is everclear.
4. I don't know if subohm makes a difference or not, most of these do's and don'ts aren't tested just speculation.

1. Just use common sense and choose the right battery for the job. In other words don't put a 10 amp battery in a mech mod. There is lots of info on batteries on here. Mooch's blog is good reading
2. I think I would do the mixing in a small bottle rather than guessing at how much your putting in the tank
3. I never use rubbing alcohol. Dawn dishwashing liquid will remove most oils from new parts and everclear for coils or a quick rinse
4. Never heard that one but most vendors have gone away from it anyway

1. Youtube
2. Mixing it in the bottle before hand will be easier, and more accurate to calculate. Here is a calculator you can use to get the nic level you want.
3. I use Everclear. I have seen reasons as to why not to use rubbing alcohol (residue left behind come to mind), but I can't recall the specifics.
4. Sub-ohm typically means more heat, so that is probably where it came from. No one can really say for sure just how dangerous they are in our application, but if there is a way to avoid potential dangers, I can't see a reason not to go that route. I went simply unflavored with nic and menthol to avoid all the diketones and anything else that comes from the flavors.

I would only add to mixing liquids. VG is heavier so will sink. Some flavors may not mix as well. So some of this and some of that into the tank may not mix all that well...meaning you may get the 0nic or the 18nic wicked first. Mixing usually involves some shake rattle and roll. (sorry, grew up in that era).

Regarding this ^^.

Spend some time with @Baditude & @Mooch (two of our resident battery/safety experts) and visit their blogs.

Here are links to some of Mooch's blogs:
* No matter what is printed on the battery wrapper: There are no 18650 batteries with a genuine rating over 30A!
* Links to all his battery tests to date: List of My Battery Tests | Mooch's Blog

Baditude's Blog - Table of Contents: <= Lots of blogs here.

The blogs that address battery safety & Ohm's Law are detailed below.

BATTERIES

Battery Basics for Mods - The Ultimate Battery Guide
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

Purple Efest Batteries not as Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

Ohm's Law Explained for Vapers
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics
* Battery Junction**

1 - 3 have been well answered, but with 4, sub ohm does not equal diketones. Subohm is simply the delivery system. If you're vaping liquid with diketones you're inhaling diketones, period. Avoiding liquids with diketones is the only preventative solution if you're concerned about them, the delivery system doesn't matter.

i was reading in the forum, that under 100 diketones is passable...but when you subohm, it changes the chemistry & it drastically alters the diketone percentage. i dont know if thats true....but the convo was about the delivery system hence my inquiry.

The acceptable amount of diketones in a liquid is definitely a personal choice, I try to avoid liquids with it at all. You're inhaling more vapor with sub ohming, so there would be more diketones per puff than compared to a tootling setup, but the chemistry hasn't changed to add more diketones, it's just a bigger puff.

For instance, if two tanks have the same size juice holding capacity with the same liquid in it, and one is using a higher than one ohm coil and the other is using a less than one ohm coil, by the end of the tank both would contribute the same amount of diketones. You'll go through the liquid faster in the sub ohm tank typically, so more diketones per puff, but at the end of the tanks it's the same amount.

@Mooch (and his blogs) is/are a great resource and we are very lucky to have him here sharing all he knows. The post below highlights his background.
Since 1992 I've been an electrical engineer specializing in power management...power supplies, battery chargers, battery management and protection systems, electronic loads (for testing batteries and power supplies), energy harvesting (getting power from solar, thermal, and vibration), energy storage (batteries and ultracapacitors), and similar products.

I loved physics in school though, still do. Mostly leaning towards particle physics and cosmology. Two vastly different realms but a surprising amount of crossover. My battery knowledge has been self taught over the years. From both the testing and evaluation of batteries for clients and what I can absorb from trade journals, research papers, datasheets, new product announcements, etc.
