I was going to clean one of my attys tonight as it's been 8 days since I last cleaned it. I unscrewed the cone and the atty was in two pieces almost. The plastic base, where it contacts the battery was still attached to the atty by one wire. The other had snapped off for some reason.

I guess I'm wondering if 2 weeks is a short life for one of these. Weird though. I've never heard of that before on the forums here. I should add that when I put it down about an hour before it was working normally.

One down 4 to go.

That would be my guess. Cleaning atties is never a good thing to start with IMHO.

Really, I'd like to hear more about that. When I first started looking around for a kit just about everyone mentioned cleaning attys. And, it's seemed like each had there own way of doing it.
I know even the manual talks about cleaning (dry burn), but I'm here to learn about this stuff, so I'm open to all opinions.

I have a couple of spares, and am going to send them with my wife to put through the ultrasonic at her work and see how that works. My first ones only a couple of weeks old and working great still.
For a laugh someone should take one to a jewelery store and have them put it in there ultrasonic they use for rings. lol
would be funny if they would do it.

I use a cheap ultrasonic cleaner I got a Radio Shack many moons ago (when it still existed in Canada) and 190 proof everclear for 5 min then a shot of super hot water via syringe and give them 3 days to dry out in a well aired space. I have been told it's overkill but it works for me!

I'd guess it's just a dud. This happens in any modern device. If 2 in a row do it get suspicious, if 3 go then toss the rest and get different stock!
