Greetings,

I'm not the smartest guy in the world so I need a little help here. I just got my latest MV shipment (FYI, I Love MV) and I can't get the new pass through to work. When I plug it in to the laptop or desk top, the red led comes on but the atty doesn't work. When I plug it in to a usb converter plug, the led just blinks.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need a special atty for this passthrough?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No special atty needed but don't use low resistance atties with 5 volts.
The power source needs to be about 1.5 amps or greater or it will just flash.. If you feel the power source is sufficient then slowly back off the atomizer 1/4 turn at a time as if the atty is screwed on too tight it can cause the connector to short which will also cause flashing..

good luck..

I don't know if this is the problem or not, but my passthru will not work with the "USB to A/C" adapter that I got with either my eGo or my Riva. I think it is because those adapters only produce "500 mAmps" which I think equals .5 amps. My passthru only works with a 2 amp USB to A/C adapter which I bought here at Madvapes. If I try to use my eGo or Riva adapter, the passthru will just flash (like you describe).

And I apologize in advance if my "mAmp" and "Amp" info is technically incorrect...I am totally ignorant about this stuff.
I just know what works with my passthru and what doesn't by experience!

(BTW, the 2 Amp adapter charges the Riva and eGo batteries in about 1/2 the time it takes with the adapter that came with my kits)

Hope this helps,
Rich

PS: I would not use a 5 volt passthru with my computer's usb plug. Some say it's safe, but a fried motherboard is a heck of a lot more expensive than an extension cord from the wall plug.......just my opinion.

There it is again! Does anybody know if a passthrough will harm a computer or is this just another internet rumer?

Again, I'm pretty ignorant as to electrical issues, but I've been told 5 volts is a pretty big draw to put on a computer USB plug.
I understand the "sit and go" passthru doesn't have such potential to harm a computer since it draws a lot less power through the USB plug.

Any electrical engineers around who can chime in????

The USB spec says the max draw per port is 500ma. That's .5 Amp. If you plug in a passthru you're plugging in a device which draws between 3x and 4x that max. You decide if that might fry the motherboard ;)

Some cheap PC designs use the following logic: 4 ports x .500ma max per port = 2A = 2000ma. So they stick a 2A power supply on the USB bus for all the ports and don't worry about any more for design knowing it would work with 4 devices each drawing 500ma. Of course it would also work with 1 device that draws 2000ma. So that's why a passthru works on some PCs. Others expressly limit the current at any given port to 500ma because that's what the spec says. The worst case is where there are say 5 ports and a 1A (1000ma) supply figuring some would be low current like mouse or keyboard. Those are the ones most likely to die because usually that underpowered supply is also very cheaply made.

the only crazy thing is ...is that my 901/808 adapter with the 901 atty n carts work with it..but not my 510's or 808 attys..that's what is baffling me...why does that one work and none of the others..the 901 works like a charm with it...thanks for the info on the usb/5 volt passthru, i have been using it so far with my pc with no prob...but i will definately look into finding a seperate powering device before i fry anything...that would not be good ....even though common sense should come into play...wish there was some kind instruction/usage/warning manuals that come with some of the vaping stuff...ecspecially for noobies like me...who without the ecf forum at times would have been completely lost.

Thanks for the reply on that, I just ordered the AC to USB adapter. I have an outlet right here and for $9 its cheap insurance, with my luck my machine would be the 1 in 1,000 that
got toasted by overusing the usb port.

As far as the 901 working but others not I'd guess its a matter of contact. The 901 atty is very efficient and will run and produce vapor down below 3V actually. The depth of the center connector is different for all 3 types you mention. If the center connector is too low it may not be making any contact at all except for the 901 with is about the lowest threaded center and most effecient. Try to very carefully pry the center connector on the passthrough upward and then try the 501 again. Also both the 501 atomizer and 808 cartomier can be manipulated a bit to make their center connector extend outward a bit. Try that if trying to adjust the passthrough doesn't help.

Ok I guess I spoke to soon about it working on my Computer just fine...now my passthru will not work at all on it..the led tip will not even light up....I guess I need to go ahead and order the 2amp AC/USB plug from madvapes.....this is definatley a agravating learning experience.... hope others can gain from it...n save themselves some time and frustration from it
