I slotted a carto for the first time and I'm pretty sure it went as deep as in your video. It sure looks like some of the filler gets cut along with the metal. I put in jokesmoke, which is very lightly flavored, and gave it a long time to soak in.

We tried vaping it and it had this rather strong grinded metal taste....exactly like the carto smelled after slotting....
We tried to slot two more.....being as careful as we could to just barely pierce the metal and not go through any filler. It turned out a little better, but still had that unmistakeable, rather unpleasant flavour....

Even now, several hours later, I can still taste it in my mouth and nose....

Are we doing something wrong? How do you avoid this flavour?

To be honest. Not sure. I've never had this issue. Perhaps you're slotting too deep?
What carto are you using? What equipment are you using to slot with?

Using this carto:

Smoktech tank Dual Coil Cartomizer
Smoktech Tank Dual Coil Cartomizer Refill 5 pack

Using a dremel and my buddy went out and bought the exact dremel metal cutter and stem as you use in your video.

Like I said, for the last one we tried, we tried to be as gentle as possible and just barely get through the metal to the filler....and the filler didn't look discoloured either....

but still, that taste and smell...

Are you telling me that when you vape in a slotted carto it tastes exactly the same as in a non-slotted one?

To me, yes. I have had some issues, but that's when I went too deep. <Insert joke here>

Try completely filling it first before you slot. Maybe a little juicy, but at least it's something to try.

Hmmm, never thought of that.....ok, I'll try that.....should at least try it before giving up and going with punching since the cutter and stem cost me like $30....lol

Yes, you have to fill the carto before you vape on it. If you weren't doing that, it makes total sense why it was burning and giving no flavor. The small slot in the carto will work to keep the carto fill as you vape the juice that's already in it, but the juice is too thick to just fill on it's own, there has to be suction pulling it into the carto from when you're actually making draws on it.

Well, yes of course I fill the carto before I vape on it. pbusardo was suggesting I fill the carto before cutting it....which I didn't do.

Either way, the metal taste/smell is there immediately after cutting and still there in the vape after filling it.

PBusardo, I'm thinking that my problem is with these particular cartos.....the metal/burnt taste that I'm describing is present whether I slot, punch, or don't....I didn't realize it at first, but it is there.

When using these cartos in the tank without doing anything to the pre-punched hole, it has this metallic taste that is just flat out different from the regular Boge cartos I'm used to...... When I punch them, either new holes or making the pre-punched hole bigger, the same taste is more pronounced. Finally, when I slot them, the taste is overpowering, and the taste stays in my mouth/nose for a while and I can't get rid of it.

Perhaps it has to do with the metal of these cartos? I really don't know...
Smoktech Dual Coils....

What is the carto that you use for slotting? perhaps I'd have better luck if I tried using the same one.....

I use the Smoktechs as well in DCT and Smoktech tanks, but I prefer the Boges in a J-Tank or similar.

Are your Smoktechs pre-drilled? are they really the same ones I've got?

I don't understand how these ones are different and why we're getting this weird taste......It's getting rather frustrating. I'd love to use these tanks, but I can't deal with this flavour...bah.

I've used both the pre-drilled and slotted my own. I usually wind up putting a small slot over the tiny pre-drilled hole anyway. As I said, the only time I got a poor taste is when I went too deep with the slot, probably mangling the inner fill.

Alrighty, thanks. I'm still trying to figure out why I'm getting this weird taste even with just punching (with a saddle valve) or just with the pre-punched hole.....perhaps it is just a weird tasting batch or something.

And if you don't punch or slot you're not getting the taste from said cartos?

If I do nothing to the carto, I still get a weird taste out of them, just not as strong as when I punch or slot....I know, it's kinda weird.

Should the taste be that much different between one carto and another?

If I could get a tank that fits around a boge carto, I'd be happy with that......perhaps I could cut down the smoktech one to fit it...

hmm .. wonder how long a small triangular file would take

it could at least make a starternotch for a hacksaw

pbusardo's moving the dremel wheel 'up'n'down' effectively chamfers the edges of the slot, for longer o-ring life

i just got my first tank, a culinary-stainless screwlid arry Actv4 ... and naturally, i distorted the carto making the hole

maybe a hacksaw blade at 45 degree angle ...

cant afford an rotary device this week, but i do have some Starrett HSS blades, its only chinese-steel Smoktechs after all

So are we saying that if you pre-fill your carto and get it nice and wet, stick it in the tank, fill the tank with Boba's or some other 100% VG that the small prepunched holes that are already on the carto will not suffice? Has anyone tried?

Also, can the condom method be used to prefill these types of cartos?

Them slots are HUGE. I use a saddle valve and make the smallest single hole I can. Well I wait for the pop then half a turn more. I still get flooding at times. Went from a $10 tank to a Arry Act4 and its not as bad with the flooding but if I had slots like that it would flood every pull, id bet on it. Why? I use 70pg/30vg. Adding 10 more percent vg on the next go around. Maybe that will help.
