“It’s always better to quit nicotine use completely,” said Deborah Arnott, Chief Executive of UK health charity Action on Smoking and Health. “But it’s the smoke that kills you - not the nicotine - so for smokers who are heavily addicted switching to safer sources of nicotine could literally be a lifesaver.”

Nice.....

"the risks [of e-cigarettes] are 1/1000th those of tobacco" <- this is far lower than our original estimate of 1/100th. It means 99.9% safer

If risk is linear--and of course it isn't, high exposure tends to increase risk out of proportion as compared to low exposures in many cases--that would mean that 40 years of vaping equates to the same risk as 0.04 years of smoking...or about 15 days.

I can live with that.

Actually, the risk assessment framework used by EPA for cancer risk does use a linear model with no threshold. This means 0 exposure=0 risk, and then a linear increase with higher exposure determined by "cancer slope factors" which are determined thru various methods for each chemical "known" to pose a cancer risk.

I know, I never bought the argument. Just like very tiny amounts of radiation are harmless (not far above normal background), but 300 REM can really mess up your day quite quickly.

I do enjoy playing with a friend of a friend who has granite countertops and is a complete hypochondriac. I stand outside the kitchen and declare, "You know you're getting triple normal background radiation in there, right?" This statement is true. That level of radiation is also harmless even if you slept on the kitchen counter. I have him mildly afraid to make an egg on the thing. :)

Ok. I'm the first to admit that it isn't nice. It's either that or mention that simply being around other people exposes you to trillions of bacteria per day.

Sometimes one's a :nun: and sometimes  That's what being human is all about. I usually try to be nice but have to admit that sometimes healthists invite this kind of deviltry, and many times, for me at least, it's impossible not to play with their minds (especially when they go on about the "risks" and "'dangers" of my ecig!).

Perhaps not nice, but sometimes it's appropriate.

I have a Thing about hypocondriacs as I'm sick less than most people I know and I'm an avid organic gardener. My doctor's said that gardeners do tend to be sick less...modest sun exposure (nothing severe and never burn, of course) and constant immune system challenges keep your system on its toes when combined with a sensible diet. And the exercise sure doesn't hurt.

The spring, summer, or fall day that I don't have several quadrillion decay bacteria packed into the dirt under my nails is rare indeed. I rely on the little dears to decay the ground soybean, release nitrogen, and feed the plants.

The fact that they're uninterested in eating humans and won't make you sick is lost on most people. I consider them my garden friends.

Inoculation! You sound like Phil Robertson (one episode on Duck Dynasty).... and I happen to agree.
