I did a search and couldn't find this elsewhere, so I apologize if I'm not the first to mention it. I started a new atomizer for my 801 yesterday and it leaked at the mouthpiece and battery end to the point that I thought it might be faulty. But I managed to fix the problem by removing the cartridge, then pulling the white liquid container off of the black mouthpiece itself. (No worries here. The white container has a bottom on it, so any liquid in the container will not drip out when removed.)

I wiped off the entire outside of the container, and ran the mouthpiece under water to remove all excess e-liquid. I removed the excess water from the mouthpiece by blowing through the wide end and wiping the inside with a Q-tip. I snapped the container back into the mouthpiece, the cart back into the atomizer, and viola...no more leaking.

I think e-liquid has a tendency to be...I dunno...self-wicking?...due to its oily base. So once it does start leaking due to overfilling or whatever, it will continue to do so until it finally dries out on its own or with a little help.

If you boil a pot of water on the stove and put a lid over the steam, what forms under the lid as the steam cools. Condensate. Vapor is the gas state of e-liquid. When it cools, it returns to its liquid state. The liquid condensate is deposited on the inside of the atomizer chamber. After a certain point where enough condensate has built up and your draw suction is just right, you take in small amounts of condensate into your mouth.

I doubt you are actually sucking in e-liquid directly from the cartridge unless your middle name is something like Hoover or Eureka. The only reliable preventative measure is to have a napkin or paper towel handy at all times to wipe off the condensate from the cartridge and occasionally blow out the mouthpiece and wipe out the atomizer barrel with said absorbant material. Shirt sleeves and pants work, too.
