A very weird (but interesting) thought just occurred to me...

We all know that nicotine is a poison.

Yet, in very small doses, it seems to give us pleasure.

I was thinking about this, and I started to wonder... What other poisons out there could provide some sort of benefit if delivered in very small doses?

Not that *I* will be the one trying anything. Nor do I suggest anyone else do so, either. It is just an interesting question... one to which we may never have answers. People would have to potentially die to find out if there are any other "beneficial" poisons out there.

We'll just have to get by with the known ones, I suppose.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, OR ANYWHERE.

umm.. psilocin, psylocybin.. ..........

i think. but i dont think you can die off of psilocin or psylocybin.. just have a very bad trip

MSG also

dont forget alcohol and caffeine

Tricyclics such as prescription antidepressants like desipramine (Norpramin and Pertofrane)

diethyl ether, chloroform, benzene. Narcotic: in large quantities produces euphoria, stupor, or coma. Up the dose a little bit more, add death to that list.

gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB)

Barbiturates and Opioids

and..

Acetaminophen...

oh yea you can also overdose on water

5HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is an over the counter product (naturally occurring amino acid) that you can buy anywhere. It is, like the rest of "herbs", not needed for FDA approval. I hear if you take many of these you can feel a sense of euphoria. However, if you take 1 to 2 daily you will enhance your memory, central nervous system, curb appetite, etc.

It's good to use as part of a daily dietary supplement.

5-HTP is just the precursor to serotonin. If you take too many you risk serotonin syndrome which can be very bad. Its not a good idea to supplement them for more than a month.

I always thought this was cool:

Basic research on the venom of the Brazilian pit viper (Bothrops jararaca) led to the development of the first ACE inhibitor drugs to treat hypertension. These drugs cause the fewest side effects of all blood pressure drugs, and have additional benefits beyond lowering blood pressure, such as stemming the risk of developing diabetes and kidney disease.

There's a general rule in medicine and toxicology that "the dose makes the poison", usually attributed to Paracelsus* A lot of common medications are poisons in the wrong dosage. Every ER and ambulance in the world carries atropine for cardiac patients - and atropine comes from Atropa Belladonna - Deadly Nightshade.

*just for fun - what he actually said was:
Alle Ding sind Gift, und nichts ohn Gift; allein die Dosis macht, daß ein Ding kein Gift ist."All things are poison and nothing is without poison, only the dose permits something not to be poisonous."
