I read many posts where ppl complain about their cartos tasting burnt or flooding in a tank. Right now I'm using a Boge carto in a mini sub tank. Obviously this particular. carto isn't wicking well. It has 2 rather largeish holes and it will not pull the juice up by itself. But ive been using it successfully for 3 days. The mini sub tank has a hole in the side of it and a small screw in the hole. When I can feel the carto start to get "dry" I unscrew the screw. Air bubbles bubble up from the hole, indicating there is negative air pressure inside the tank for some reason. I then take a draw and screw. the screw back in. I'm good to go until theair pressure gets negative again. Dry sucks also help.

This is not the tank's fault. If you are getting dry hits, if your carto isn't wicking well, you have to let some air in! If your carto is flooding, you have too much air inside the tank, the air pressure will continually force the juice into the carto causing it to flood. It is a simple matter of unscrewing the screw and letting the excess air OUT.
I will not be using a tank without a fill hole in the side again. A side fill hole mot only makes it much easier to fill, it also allows you to control the balance of air pressure inside the tank.

If I were using a tank without a hole, I wouldn't be able to vape this setup
I hope this might help someone who is having these problems. I also have chibi tanks that I am in the process of modding by drilling a fill hole (just have to find the right screws)

I haven't much success with dual coil cartos in a tank so I am looking forward to trying one (again) this time being able to control the air pressure. So I don't know it any of this applies to dc cartos or not.

You are spot on. I try to convey the same to tank users. If you don't vent the tank, you have your finger over the end of the straw, so to peak, and fluids will not move at some point. Manual venting is the way to go, via a hole in the tank, a screw, and probably an o-ring to help seal the hole as it wears from working the screw over time.

I'm a noob to the whole tank issue and continuously fighting air pressure. Always waiting until it stabilizes and stops leaking. It seems very wasteful and thought some kind of carb that you can plug and unplug would help. So help....please? Where is this tank with fill hole?

Momandpopvaporshop sells the sub tanks that have fill ports. I'm sure there are others.

What size screws are being used for the Chibi tanks? Are they metal or some other material? I've been having a heck of a time with a Chibi tank and think the vent / fill hole in the side would solve the problems. Plus I hate having to fiddle with the syringe...lol. I know it's leaking due to not being "equalized".
Thanks for any help......

As of right now, the chibi tanks donot have fill/vent holes. I have a bunch of poly tubing that I've cut to length. I just went to lowes and bought some 6-32 nylon screws and a drill bit. When my husband gets home afterwhile Im going to get him to drill some holes. I don't think an open hole (with no plug/screw) will work because with the carto that I'm using now, a 2ohm Boge, I can only take one to two draws with the hole open (screw out) before it will start to get floody.

This carto I'm using right now is a bit of a pain but with venting, its working to my satisfaction. It certainly wouldn't work in a tank with no vent/fill hole.

MikeE3 modded his tanks to include a fill/vent hole. I'm just copying him (Thanks Mike!) so if you want to mod your existing tanks.. it can be done. If you just want to buy inexpensive tanks that already have a fill/vent hole.. you can get the sub tank in different sizes at momandpopsvaporshop.

The tanks without the cartos are $9.50 the tanks that include a carto are $13

Thanks for the info, Donnah.....I'll check @ Lowes for those screws. I am going to go the bulk tube and grommet route because I want to have several (well, maybe more than several...lol) tanks going at the same time with different flavors. I'm still debating whether to go with polycarbonate or polypropylene. I want to use the SS XL SmokTek 1.7's and I'm wondering if the polypropylene will be straight enough for an XL carto. So many decisions....lol. Oh, yeah, still trying to decide about using O-rings or not. I think it was you who said there is a learning curve to the tanks.... truer words never spoken!! But, I'm having a ball trying to get everything to work properly. I probably should buy stock in one of the paper towel mfg. companies!!!
Really appreciate your help. horton -- out

The fact that a tank without a vent emits a bubble through the carto's feed hole after a negative pressure excursion (a draw, dry or in operation) shows that it is indeed feeding.

An analogy, though not identical, would be that of a potable beverage in a sealed vessel. Using a straw to orally extract such fluid will meet with success up to the point of acheiving an absolute vacuum of zero torr. Admittedly, one's head would likely implode and be transferred through said straw into said vessel. Upon the release of negative pressure, before cranial implosion, one may again obtain a measure of said potable beverage by repeating oral depressurization of said vessel.
In the absense of the presence of a mono-directional orifice flow control or restriction apparatus, one cannot impose a permanent negative pressure state in a sealed vessel. The sealed system will invariably achieve a stable state of equilibrium without hysteresis.

/nerdspeak

In short, when you use an unsealed tank, you suck AND it sucks (each in turn) :)

I bought the polycarbonate tubing and vinyl grommets from amazon. I haven't gotten any o-rings for the grommets yet. But these seem to work fine. I don't know if I'm having a ball or not but when I discover something that works, it sure makes me happy LOL. I've got about $20 in tubing and grommets and another $10 or so in screws and drill bit.. I could have probably came out just as well by buying several unassembled tanks from parksvaping or momandpopvaporshop but sometimes I get into the crafty mode.. plus I have a couple friends I like to make things for. Sometimes (if it doesn't look too complicated) I like to see if I can make it myself.

I did buy a box mod diy kit from madvapes but never put it together.. I ended up sending it to Steve (foxyboxmods) who built it for me. I see all these people making their own attys but that sounds a little too complicated for me also. But tanks are easy to build and understand, for me anyway. I love to be able to say "oh, I made that" LOL

Foxfur -- your analogy made sense..... The part about having my head imploding was a bit unsettling, but what the heck, you made the point.....lol. What I still don't get is why my Chibi tank keeps leaking. Today, I put in a new SmokTek 1.7 with a tiny hole, after cleaning and drying the tank. Filled it using the syringe and all seemed good. (BTW... I had already put juice in the carto after punching it and before putting it in the tank). I got a few good hits, and then heard the feared gurgling and knew right away the thing was leaking. I'm sure this is a very stupid question, and I took "bonehead" physics in school, but will drilling a vent hole to fill the tank and then plugging it with a screw help the situation? I'm completely at sea now and very frustrated with this device. It seems so simple, but it is not.

Donnah -- I am having a ball because I love to fiddle with projects and love a challenge. I don't think I'll donate any more to the vendor when I can buy the materials at lesser cost. I'm a little put out with Parkes not replying to my notes anyhow. (maybe they think I'm a pain in the rear?? lol) . To me, this is like catching a fish on a fly I've tied using a home made rod. It's what you call the "crafty mode" and it definitely is very satisfying. I get the same enjoyment out of building box mods. Luckily, I can solder and have all the needed equipment for it. My problem is I have lost the feeling in my dominant hand and it makes soldering or doing tasks with small objects difficult at times. I'm slowly adapting.

This thread is teaching me quite a bit and I thank everyone for their input. Hopefully I will eventually get a tank to work and not leak. If I have to read a physics book again or relearn calculus, so be it....lol. Thanks again for all of your help...... horton -- out

Blow out your carto (still inside the tank) to get rid of the flooding and put it back on your device. Now stand in front of a mirror and vape. Stand close to the mirror and watch the tank.. when you take a draw do you see any air bubbles coming from anywhere other than the punched hole in the carto? Do you see any air bubbles coming up from the bottom grommets? If you do there is an air leak, what is happening is as you vape, air is coming in from the outside of the tank.. after a while, that air creates enough pressure inside the tank that the pressure forces the juice into the carto and out the bottom.. the dreaded flooding.

I don't know or not if it has anything to do with the size of the hole punched in the carto or not. what I do know is that the air pressure inside the tank has to be balanced for it to work. As I said above, the carto I'm using now isn't wicking well.. as I vape the air pressure inside the tank keeps being reduced to the point where I have to open the fill/vent hole to let some air IN. Or I'll get a dry hit/burnt taste. This is actually the first time I've had this problem, having to let air in. But taking the screw out every once in a while is easier than refilling the carto again and again (if it wasn't in the tank)

Also if you fill the carto with a syringe by sliding it between the grommet and tube.. you have to let the displaced air escape as you fill the tank with juice. Or there will be too much air in the tank and it will flood.

I don't fill my cartos before I put them in a tank.. I know that some do and have no problems. I once tried to drip into my carto that was in a tank and ended up flooding it. I had to blow it out several times before the pressure equalized out again. It seems everyone has different experiences with tanks. I've heard good things about the madvapes tank, no one has complained about it that I have seen (just thought I'd throw that in there)

I too like to diy certain things.. I'll leave the mod building to the ones that have that calling... I'll leave the atty building to those that feel the need to do that (I don't) but when it comes to juices and tanks.. I love experimenting and see what works for me and what doesn't. It's become a hobby :)

Hi Horton!
I would certainly think so.
A few posts ahead the poster mentions looking for bubbles. I think if you take the tank off your battery, plug the bottom center hole, and draw on the mouthpiece, you should be able to spot bubbles that indicate where the incoming air is coming from. The side air entry holes on the bottom will allow some air to enter the carto and will limit how deep of a vacuum you are able to put on it. If you can figure out how to occlude these side holes then you should be able to draw extremely hard and develop quite a vacuum. I like the poster's idea of using a mirror. Quite sharp indeed!

You mentioned being at sea. Are serving in the military, working, or simply enjoying the finer things in life?
Bon voyage :)

Donnah -- I'll try your suggestions and report back. I know there has to be something going on wrong by my doing because so many peeps are able to use the Chibi with no problems. And, yes, there sure are many ways to do things in terms of filling. At one point, I had 2 18 gauge needles just for air venting sticking out of the top plus the syringe I was putting juice in with.....lol. Really looked cool.....NOT. I'm gonna get this figured out one way or the other.

Foxfur -- I will also try what you suggest. Yes, Donnah's idea of the mirror is an excellent idea. When I mentioned being "at sea" I was referring to being confused. It's an expression I've used for years. Maybe it's a midwest thing, but I've always used it to refer times when I'm sort of lost or not understanding something. How I wish I was somewhere on a cruise!!

Thanks again for all of the suggestions -- I really appreciate them. I was sidetracked this evening and will check the tank out tomorrow when I'm rested and more alert. It drives me nuts when I can't figure out what is going wrong with a device. I shall prevail though!!!! lol

Here's something that has been working wonderfully for me. I've been using tanks for about 3 weeks now and I've just discovered that if you alternate dry hits with blowing into the carto while it's still attached to the mod, that will help offset the pressure differential inside the tank and allow the carto to fill up. The side screw method works as well but can be a bit messy if you aren't careful and it is a bit inconvenient. The easiest way that I've found is just to blow back into the carto (use a little pressure) and alternate with dry pulls and it will fill the carto up very quickly.

I got the momnpop small and large tanks last tues. I only like boges, so i took the carto out of the big one and put a boge in there, increasing my liquid storage, albeit looking a little funny.

I was surprised at how easy the grommets and carto goes back in, yet gives a very tight fit. I've had no leaking or flooding, but it's bone dry on top and stays that way no matter how many tricks like you guys have written that I do to it.

I use a plastic needle top 30ml to fill it in 3 seconds, twice a day- 70/30 pg/vg. It's hitting perfect with a lot of vapor and popping and crackling like new. I want to get the new XL/LR Boges, and I think I'll get another 1ml. from this tank.

Has anyone been considering that along with the thin-ness or thickness of the juice, that it'll be making a difference also in how tightly/loosely it's screwed onto your PV will make a difference in dry/flooding issues? That if you have it screwed down too tight that it'll try to then draw more from the carto?
