That's a great looking coil. It's impossible to tell for sure, but by looking right at the top of the coil in pic 4 it looks like the wick might be a little too loose in the coil.

I would suggest pulling that wick out and pulling a short cotton wick through that coil. Twist it enough to get it through, then untwist it and use a paper clip to poke it back toward the center of the coil from both ends. Drip on some juice and wait a bit for the cotton to swell, then see what it tastes like. If you're still getting a bad taste, I'd think it would have to be something with that atty although I'd can't imagine what it could be.

I tried that and It's still a super harsh throat hit, it feels like I'm dieing.

It might be that you are sensitive to the high iron content in Kanthal (including the A-1 formulation)

If you look at:
Specs for Kanthal A-1

You can see that the "balance" (approx 70%) of the wire content is Iron

You might try something like Nichrome 80 which is "80% Nickel, 20% Chromium"

I'm out of Nichrome 80 at the moment, but when I get some, I'd be happy to send you (for free) a small amount to play with. Just send me a PM your info and I'll hook you up.

Craig

Thanks, I hope that is the problem and I sent you a pm.

Maybe it's just the angle of the pics, but there seems to be a lot of space between the coil and the posts. The "tails" reaching out from the wick to the posts could be causing your problem. When I wrap mine, my wick/coil is closer to parallel with the posts, resulting in almost zero wire not touching the wick, and nothing but goodness.

Google images returned this pic, which is an illustration of what I'm talking about.

I thought about that too, and I've made some even nicer ones than that. They were pretty flush to the point where the coils were just far enough to not be touching.

Pro tip : scrab it with hot milk. rinse with water. wash it with hot milk again. rinse with water.

all metallic smells are dead.

I'm going to try this, thanks!

Ok, I tried this and it seemed to help a little bit, but the problem is still there. It's still a very harsh hot throat hit with a lingering metallic taste. I made 3 different coils with this method.

Just curious, what voltage are you pushing into it?

I'm only using a twist so with every coil I start low and bring the voltage up slowly. Even at the lowest voltage I get that harsh throat hit I'm talking about. I've been making 1.5-2.5 ohm coils just to figure out what was going on. It sucks, I've made a lot of coils and they're all doing it.

I was assuming that it was, but I do a dry burn and a wet burn. Oh well, I'll just keep trying.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I appreciate it.

My :2c: as a RBA noob...If your dry burning with cotton wick installed your burning the wick.
Also, that is a thin looking wick in the pics, might not be wicking fast enough because of it. It should swell a little bigger than the coil, just a little! My cotton ball wicks swell alot, takes a little trial and error to get enough without choking.

I'm not sure if the post is too old now to bump, but I just wanted to update in case anyone else has the same problem as me. Craig was nice enough to send me a sample and I've been having no problems at all.

I just got around to wrapping a coil with nichrome instead of kanthal. The first coil I made came out amazing. I'm getting a great throat hit and great taste, and none of the scratchy throat hits. I wrapped a nice coil around a drill bit and installed it. Then I stuffed it with some cotton and I couldn't be happier with it.
