So, the scoop is that some large vaping vendor (I think it's VS, but not sure) sent off some of the new ceramic coils to a professional lab to be tested. According to rumor they found some "bad things" leaching from the ceramic when heated. Magnesium Oxide is one chemical in question.

Grimm Green, in a VLOG, said one of the guys doing the testing called him and told him to stop vaping his Target immediately.

Phil Busardo has a short, vague write-up about the controversy here. He wont say much because he and others in the know have been asked to keep it quiet for now. Apparently this vape vendor who is doing the testing is being threatened with legal action. Phil said in his post that the results were going to be released like two weeks ago. It never happened, so I am assuming the vendor got cold feet over the spectre of lawsuits.

To me, it seems odd that people like Grimm and Phil cannot tell what they know. I find it extremely unlikely that a lawsuit against either of them would stand up in court and I think it's rather unethical for either of them to keep this quiet. The truth is an absolute defense against defamation, slander or libel.

Oh, and to clarify, the coils in question are the Vapresso Target, but this vendor claims they are sending off the ones from the Dolphin, the Altus, and a few others as well.

I was very close to picking up a Target, might hold off... the idea and premise of ceramic coils is very intriguing to me, though not sure how harmful chemicals would leach out of what should be a medical grade ceramic, though substandard manufacturing to cut costs could certainly be the issue if this is true.

I don't have any of them, but will be on the look out for the study and until then to be safe won't purchase any. Phil & Grim, might not be able to say exactly due to legal restrictions; however they have said it by not saying if you know what I mean;)
Sometimes it's what you don't say that carries the furthest

Being curious as to how a coil can be ceramic I took a look on Google at these ceramic coils, and the coil itself isn't ceramic at all. It's metal wire wound around ceramic wicking material. So instead of just rolling your own wicks and winding your own coils, as I've been quite happily doing for three years now, I'd have to pay someone else for both those things. I have to say that doesn't work for me at all. It's just a ceramic wick of sorts, pre-coiled, that you have to pay someone else for. Nah!

Ceramic coils. I never would have thought of that. Well, if I can't wind it myself I'm not interested. I'm not paying someone else to make my coils. Kanthal works just fine for me.
I'm with you. I roll my own and happy to do it, although I also like SS wire in additional to Kanthal. However, there are... aaahhh... possibilities. I can envision, for example, a heating coil wrapped around a copper heat sink, the whole enclosed in a stainless wrap. The juice would never touch the coil, and you could then "wick" with a miniaturized peristaltic pump. This would be much cleaner and need no maintenance aside from an occasional rinse. Properly designed, such an assembly might last several years in service. That's all in the future, of course. AFAIK, nobody's even working on such a thing. But it could be done today, at least with a wall-supply power source. You'd turn it on, wait for the LED to turn green (when the element got to temp) and then vape by squirting juice on a hot element. There would be advantages in use in such a rig... Even so, I'll still probably roll my own. I like doing it :)

Well, i'm not even considering buying one of those till i see some official test results. There has been so many trials with ceramic coils in the history and they all have been proven to be quite some toxic. I don't think that this is any different. It's just the way ceramic reacts to aggressive changes of the temperature.

Oh yeah, and the whole thing can be powered by a quantum singularity contained in magnetic field :)

Eh... I'll just stick with my mesh and kanthal built gennies.

Well, it could be, but it doesn't have to be. Windmills and solar panels and coal fired power plants would also work :) Consider, though: the heating element in a hot water heater or a coffee pot might last 5 years or more. Why, then, do vape coils need rebuilding more often? Sorry, but this intrigues the engineer in me. I was taught, many years ago, a requirement for periodic maintenance is a clear indication a proper design has not yet been reached. As I say, I like coil building and will probably continue anyway because it's fun. I am not a Genny guy, but I am a Mekkie from way back and I like the challenge of building one well. However, there are others who do not enjoy tinkering and for whom coil replacement therapy, whether built or pre-made, is a chore they'd just as soon do without. Those people need better gear...

People who don't enjoy tinkering? Good lord, what's wrong with them? They should see someone about that!

All kidding aside, life is 90% maintenance, and it's best to just find a way to enjoy it. I love getting up in the morning and tinkering with my coils and wicks, getting my gennies to vape just right, and feeling satisfied when I do.

As far as the mechs go, I use Poldiacs, and I'm happy to maintain them too. They don't require much maintenance either.

I think these ccell coils are embedded inside the ceramic, not wrapped around it.

The idea is to make a coil that can be cleaned and reused.

Okay, cleaned and reused. I do that with my coils every day. I just slip the wick out, burn off the coil, knock off the carbon with a dental pick, slip the wick back in and I'm good to go. Clean and reused. I'm not sure how much the 4 inches of 26 kanthal I make my coils with costs, but I am sure it's a lot less than one of those ceramic coils, and it will last a more than a month.
