add mini usb charging to box mod,

hi, i am interested in adding pass through/charging abilities to a box mod, can any one find simple to read directions for do so? I have lucked and had no such luck. i would be running 3.7 volts

Too big for a mod, but it sounds like a nice item.

- Default charge rate is about 280mA, but you can easily change this by soldering in a through-hole resistor on. The chip can do 100-1200 mA charging

If you aren't planning on using a very big battery, the pcbs from a cheap 510 passthrough might fit better. They are a bit too long for anything that I am interested in building and their max charging current is probably pretty low.

My first mod was actually cutting a passthrough down to size and adding a switch. It worked fine but I don't care much for 10440's and it never occurred to me (until just now) to transplant the boards. Could probably even do away with the larger of the two boards. If I recall, it's just 1 small 3-pin ic and a couple of resistors. The smaller board is a bit harder to get to, but I could just leave it in the steel tube and use those threads.

This thread has given me some ideas. I think I am going to try out the p/t on a bigger battery tonight.

You couldnt use the USB Breakout Board from madvapes in some kind of configuration?

This is the connector I use from Digikey The madvapes looks like a good item if you don't want to reflow solder the connector on.

i will check out the mad vapes one, room is a big issue since what im building needs room for juice bottle, wiring and of course batt

Bad thing about using the stock ecig chargers is the quiescent current is fairly high. A battery fully charged to 4.2 volts will light the LED up if hooked directly into the battery and no input voltage to the USB. I have not measured it but my guess* is your getting at least a 10ma to 20mA constant drain from the battery if the charger is hooked straight into the battery.( *Guess based on a lit LED will consume at least 10ma if not more depending on make and model) Might not seem like much but it adds up over time.

Doesn't look very large to me, maybe 1.5x1.5" ? I think you could take off the barrel jack, and both of the battery plugs, and it would be under 1/4 inch tall. Figure out a cover for it, and glue it onto the other side of the box from the door, with the usb flush to the side.

Usually when folks say 'box mod' I assume a 2 or 3AA battery box and are looking for something to fit into a slot shared with a switch, about 3/8 x 1.25". Like the Bartleby.

It should be fine for a larger project box.

I found this thread it shows how to do it. its not mini usb but standard usb and you have to remove the usb connector.

I also did a web search for micro usb break out boards and found these.

you are correct about the vertical but the horizontal board does look correct (female end).
