Advice/wisdom for how to best dial in settings for my first box mod and sub ohm tank.

Hi all,

Registered and lurked here for awhile now but never really had a need to post until today.

I've been doing the e-cig/vape thing since November 2014 with a Kanger Emow Mega 1600 mAh as my starter to help me get off my two pack a day cigarette habit. I've had some success but I keep going back and forth. One of the reasons I go back and forth is because I've sort of outgrown my Kanger. Initially it was fine for the first week or two but then I was burning through the battery in less than a day and had no power and would smoke, so I bought a spare battery. Then I was noticing that the Kanger was good and strong for about the first hour from a charge but would taper off and get weak. I'd get frustrated and smoke instead, then my lungs would have enough of smoking after a week or two and I'd cycle back to the Kanger and then it would all repeat.

I finally decided to buy a stronger, more reliable rig this week and did some research and between my research and what was available in my area I ended up with an IPV4S and a Triton tank (I have no interest in building my own coils at this point). I'm using the 0.4 ohm included coil and I've bought that thicker juice with a lower nic content (I don't know the correct terminology to differentiate between the two). The Triton has an upper and lower airflow adjustment, I have the top closed and the lower one is getting fairly close to shut, I find it way too airy otherwise.

My problem/question is (and I realize it's personal and individual) but as a guideline/rule of thumb what sort of watts should I be dialing it in at? I've been everywhere between 10W and 40W and I just can't seem to find a decent spot I'm happy with. I found one site that reviewed it and recommended 30W - 35W Aspire Triton Review - Top Filling Sub Ohm Tank but I'm just not enjoying it like I feel should. For reference, I don't really care about clouds, I'm looking for throat hit and taste. With the Kanger I found a chart online to use as a guideline http://www.vaporsworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/power-vaping-chart-lg.jpg obviously this chart doesn't take sub-ohm into account.

The other thing is, as far as I can tell, the lowest ohms get down to 0.1 ohms in a retail sub-ohm tank and most guys seem to be talking about how they don't go past say about 50W. When would someone use a 100w setting for example? I get that lower ohms equals more watts but I've never heard of a coil less than 0.1 ohms.

I've read a bunch of things that I can find online and Googled what I can, I've been on Reddit, etc and I'm just not getting the answers I seek. I'm sure the vets can see a ton of things I'm mistaken on or just not getting hence my post and request for some advice and guidance here.

Thanks.

That's a lot to unpack- so in terms of "thicker" juice I assume you mean higher vegetable glycerine content. Usually juice is a mixture of vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol.

VG is a thicker fluid that creates more clouds, and PG has more throat hit and is a better carrier of flavor.

As you already have a reputable tank and a regulated mod, my suggestion would be to go to a higher PG juice, and perhaps higher nic content as well. Then, slowly step up the wattage until you are getting a desirable throat hit.

I'm not sure anyone can tell you a "rule of thumb" for wattage, other than start low and step up from there. But if you're subohming at 40W and not getting sufficient throat hit that sounds like you need more PG/nic.

Have you tried Halo juices? Pretty high PG content and widely available, so a B&M store may have them available for you to taste. They are primarily tobacco flavors

Hello and welcome to the forum @Lucifers Rising. Glad to have you here!:)

There are 3 different coils available for the Aspire Triton although they can use the Aspire Atlantis coils as well. Here are the suggested wattage (these may be printed on the coil) for each of the coils. These are not absolutes, just suggestions.

0.3Ω = 55-65 watts
0.4Ω = 25-30 watts
1.8Ω - 10-13 watts

Due to the size of the coil, the only one that is designed to be used for M2L (mouth2-lung) inhaling with restrictive airflow
is the 1.8Ω coil. The other coils are usually used when direct lung inhaling (wider open airflow). Here is a written review of the Triton with pictures of the coils: Aspire Triton Review - Top Filling Sub Ohm Tank. Notice how small the 1.8Ω coil is compared to the other coils. If you compare the bottom pins of your coils you will probably see that the 1.8Ω pin has smaller airflow as well.

I am a D2L (direct-2-lung) inhaler and as such require wide open airflow. I like an airy vape. I have a UWell Crown Tank (one of the many subΩ clearomizers) and using their 0.2Ω coil I vape at around 90 watts. It's a very comfortable warm vape. Great flavor, lots of vapor. I can even go up higher (110-120 watts) without getting "dry hits" but the vapor is hotter than I like so I vape lower wattage.

The only below 0.2Ω factory coils I have seen are NI200 coils, used only in a temperature control mod.

Hey, thanks.

Those are absolutely great answers from you two, fills in some of the gaps I had quite well.

To respond and answer GoBlue88 about my juice; I bought 3 bottles to get started. All three are locally produced in Vancouver, BC (where I'm at). With my Kanger I was using 18mg and had seriously thought about going up to 24mg which I would have had I not changed up my gear. I asked what's typical and the dealer said 6mg and that12mg is max for High VG so I went with 6mg. Two of the bottles are by the same company and they claim they are "MAX VG" content, the third and last one is a 70VG/30PG mix.

I think for my next batch I'll try and source some stuff that available on a more of an international level to compare to the locally produced stuff.

If something comes to mind that you want to add I'll be listening.

Again thanks for info, it was much appreciated.
