to start it might not be bad to grab an ego-t or riva, if you get a tank system be sure to grab a couple of atomizers to test out different juices you might want to try. when you find one to your liking fill up your tank and roll with it. id start out with 24mg nic myself. alot of people say not to get tobacco flavor to start but i needed to for myself then as i tried other juices i found i was done with the tobacco flavor and liked sweet stuff better. good luck and ask alot of questions and read alot.

Welcome MellowMan.
That's a tough question, as everyone has different preferences, likes and dislikes. I can tell you what I am using, and many others will do the same soon. I have an eGo passthrough, which can be used plugged into my computer, or unplugged and goes for a good 6 or 8 hours, a heavy vapor may get less. You can get that with no extras (cartos, juice, etc) for under $20. I use smoktech dual coil cartos with it, and can get about 2-3 weeks on one, and they run around $2 ea.
This will get you something to think about until you hear from the many other great people here.

Right Over Here
You need a bigger battery style pv, ego or Epower if you want to stay cone shaped, or a 3.7 or VV box mod if you don't care about that. I would advice you to go with a cartomizer with that, so you can get less fiddling to start with. Get nic at various amounts to start if you want to try alot or 24 mg if you want to start with one, for a fair guess at a starting need. I think alot of us start with something and grow from there, and if you start above a basic 510 it will never be wasted money, but at least a backup. Please, ask more questions, everyone here wants to help!

Welcome!

I am new here myself but I was a pack a day smoker last week. Now smoke free and it was amazingly painless. The only advice I can give is that you should start with 24mg juice. The lower nic juices did not stop my cravings after smoking a pack a day of Marlboros. I ordered three bottles of tobacco flavored juices and one dessert flavor to start. Funny thing, after gaining my ability to taste back I did not enjoy the tobacco flavors. They tasted great at first, though nothing really comparable to a cigarette. Now that my tastbuds have healed these juices have gained a sweetened ashtray taste.... If you like coffee or chocolate I have found those flavors are much more accurately replicated than the tobaccos.

I got the Ego starter kit which seems to be pretty well liked as an initial PV here. Love it but I am already moving to a tank system as dripping is pretty constant/frequent on the standard models. EGO or EGOT unless you require the aesthetics of an analogue cigarette.

Hard to say. What I usually recommend

Best/stronest slim ecig: KR808D-1 w/ MANUAL batteries (harder to kill, easier to get a good hit)
Vapor4Life - allows longer drags, not rubberized, manuals not as well sealed, 3.7v & hotter fresh off the charger OR SmokelessImage/Bloogplanet/Halocigs G6 - rubberized, 3.6v regulated, 40mah longer charge per size, but a 5-second cutoff (may cut off long drags, espeically since wth manuals you press hte button 1-2 seconds early to have vapor ready when you start dragging). I use both. I think the cartomizers of the latter 3 are a bit better but found my 2 main juices at V4L. Lots of prefilled and plenty of blank cartomizers for this model since it is a 2-piece. On a manual battery use a standard resistance DSE901 atomizer and drip tip to try new juices. Only put juices you know you like in cartomizers.

More charge more power
A 510-threaded fat battery model Joye Ego (3.4v) or Riva 510 kit from Liberty-Flights.com (3.7v) - use a drip tip to test juices, use blank cartomizers for your favorites. These are over 450mah so they can optionally use the hotter LR low resistance atomizers and cartomizers

The it-must-look-like-a cig
Anything the same thickness as a cig is annoying inflexible crap. You have to accept 9.2mm diameter (about the same as KR808D-1). Joye 510 with manual batteries and use Boge standard resistance Boge cartomizers to look like a cig. NiteLiteVapor.us sells the Boges cartomizers in white, tan and the normal black.

All need eliquid, especially the second 2 which have almost no decent prefilled cartomizers. Blanks are filled and kept damp. Prefills are kept damp. Everything uses eliquid unless you are rich - then you can just toss 2-3 prefilled cartos per day.

100mah of battery charge is about 1 hour of moderate vaping w/ standard resistance atomizers or cartomizers, less if low resistance attys or cartos are used (only big fat battery models and mods can use the hotter low resistance stuff)

Hello MellowMan
I just started vaping close to two weeks ago. I read the forums here at ECF for a few days before I decided on what to purchase. There is a lot of great info here and the people are very friendly. My suggestion is to take your time and do a lot of research. You can find out about most anything you need to know right here. If you can't find it just ask a question someone will show up to give you an answer. That has been my experience anyway. I kept smoking for a few days after I began to vape and kept a pack of cigs around just in case. The first one in the morning is the one I had a hard time with. After a couple of days I just quit. I have not smoked one since last Sunday morning. I have had a few cravings but they usually disappear in a minute or so. When I get one I just vape. It has been a big help to me. This forum has also been a big help. It has shown that I am not alone and there is a sollution. Take care and good luck.
