Oh goodness, that's terrible!

The immune system is really an incredible beast. I don't have any allergies, but since I got my tattoo almost a year ago, I occasionally have raised bumps where the ink seeps out. I've been told this is a natural response to impurities in the ink.

But when I got sick last week, after seeing my mom spend 3 weeks in bed with the same thing, I was determined to knock it out by New Year's Eve. So I loaded up on B vitamins (via 2 5-hour-energies per day), and sure enough, I was better in three days. But the stimulus to my immune system also affected my tattoo, which is now raised and itchy all the way around :(

Seeing as it takes up half of my upper back, I hope it goes away soon! But more than that, I hope YOURS gets better soon!

I've been tattooing for about 10 years.

Try using A+D ointment with zinc or witch hazel. That usually works pretty well for my customers when they end up with allergic reactions (red pigment, bacitracin, etc.). Witch hazel does wonders for calming the rash and itches. I usually apply it to freshly inked tattoos so I can get pictures without the redness. I've had friends (in other states from the net) who had reactions from various things. I usually have them clean the tattoo with Listerine and let it air dry. Then apply a light coat of A+D. Their troubles are usually over in a couple of hours.

Most tattoo pigments are mixed with witch hazel, distilled water, or alcohol. It's especially a crap shoot if the artist mixes their own pigments from powder form.

One thing to consider is the aftercare. I've seen reactions, not unlike allergic reactions, due to improper aftercare. Make sure that tattoo is kept clean during the healing. Use antibacterial soap to clean it (Dial). Try to clean it at least 3 times a day. Or use Listerine if you don't have Dial. Then apply a light coating of bacitracin or neosporin to help with the healing and to keep it moist. Never use hand cream on a healing tattoo (that is a big one that sets off chain reactions).

This is the kind of tattoo I want to get.

I lurk Gizmodo a lot, and I've seen some amazing nanobot inventions that will be coming out. Temporary, animated tattoos included. My favorite is somebody's design for a watch that moves under your skin! :yikes:
