Not to mention that it's even quicker to just hit the "like" button to show appreciation

Some do, some don't. Just like in RL, when you wave some motorist to go in front of you, some wave thanks, some don't.

Oh god, that is the worst. When someone doesn't wave thanks to me after letting them in I just want to hit the gas and ruin their day...

All this starts in the home.
Most young adults, with 2 working or a single parent were raised in a House, not a home.

Social standards have dropped significantly:glare:.

Excuse me, but I was a single mom and my son grew up to be kind, caring, and polite. That said, my niece's two kids (grew up in a 2-parent, affluent home with "involved" parents and a stay at home mother) never once thanked me for Christmas gifts (and I was right there in the room with them), so I stopped giving them. So, I wouldn't be quite so quick to generalize there crxesss.

If I start a thread I'll thank the people who give me feedback. But if I jump on a thread & ask a question I usually just "like" the post of the person who answered my question. Seems kinda dumb to jump in again just to say thanks lol.

but I get your point. If people take the time to help out it's only polite to say thanks if they were helping you.

It is not just people that vape. It is society in general. I have to kick my kids almost anytime someone does something for them to say thank you.

this year I gave 3 graduation gifts. a month ago. I still haven't even gotten an acknowledgement, much less a thank you. sigh.......... they get a few more weeks before I call and hopefully embarrass them! they each get one more chance and if they don't thank me for the next present, I'm free, no more presents for them!

............
I suspend normal courtesy rules when I'm on the internet myself; It's just not the same as the real world.

well, I think that is a shame - courtesy rules should apply in every aspect of life in my opinion! perhaps because I'm old?

That makes a certain amount of sense, Dayglow.

But really, I'm talking about the person who posts, "Help! My tank is leaking!" and then fails to acknowledge the 47 paragraphs of useful advice that follow.

Surely even a grunting, drooling caveman ought to realize that this is just plain rude?

Lol! It's worse when they ask a question, get 47 posts of helpful advice and then argue about why they don't need to follow it. Bless their little hearts. :)

Merci

Imo society has gone down the tubes at an alarming rate , what happened to morals ,discipline, consequences and respect , it's terrible a real shame . Whats the percentages now , 60-70% of children born out of wedlock , i can go on a tangent but i'll leave it at that.

You let people cut in front of you in traffic and they don't show any appreciation , like it was my duty to let them in and i get stuck at a faulty red light that changes every eight minutes because i missed the green by one car length .

Not to mention that it's even quicker to just hit the "like" button to show appreciation

Honestly, i had no idea what a" like " button was when i started posting here , i still don't know what it means so if i see others like something i jump in and like it to . Not a member or familiar with facebook , from what i hear it's a complete nightmare.

There is something I find the "like" button useful for in a forum this size. If you read a post and have a question, but the poster has gone somewhere else or it has been a couple of days (or if you post an answer and want to make sure the person who asked the question reads it) click "like" on their last post. There is a high probability they will return to the thread to check it out.

I've also found it useful to subscribe to threads where I'm expecting (or hoping for) feedback to a post of mine. That way, I can easily and quickly see if there's been a new post to any of them, and follow up. Courteously, of course... :)

Good manners are taught at a young age and not learned just by using the internet...

I agree 100%

I've got a 6 year old and I just ignore him if he asks for something and doesn't say please first. Please, thank you, yes/no sir - seem to be forgotten now-a-days.

And the internet - It's the worst! The gloves come off and people hide behind a screen and a keyboard. They'll say things over the net that they would never say to your face.

I always say thank you. I am endlessly grateful for any help. People are just not educated. People just have bad manners. People can just be rude. People lack graciousness. People do not understand common courtesy. To some it up, many people just lack one iota of CLASS.

Thanks for bringing this up.

...a "thanks" is nice, but I can't and don't expect it.

Better not to project my values on others.

I teach my kids to play the game, ( please, thanks, you are welcome, etc ) but they are too young to understand how valuable "courtesy" is in getting what you want.

Plenty of knights out there just waiting to slay dragons for you. Say please and thanks and the dragon eats them instead or the path is cleared. Win/Win

Have fun

I think it has a lot more to do with society in general. I've talked to my wife about this before and she seems to have no interest in saying please and thank you to me as a way of setting an example for our three young children. I feel as though it is very important for our kids to have manners and "make" them use them when asking me a question, but if I do the same thing when they are asking my wife a question she gets upset with me. We've went rounds over this same topic and nothing has changed.

WOW! I find it shocking that you would have to argue with your wife over this.
Guess it says a lot about her parents.

My hubby and I always say please and thank-you etc to each other and to our children from the time they were babies. Our one son as rather severely autistic and has limited speech and even he says please and thank-you!

I really think it all starts at home at a very young age and how that translates to the internet is a personal choice thing.
On my own forum the majority of posters are very polite. Of course not all.
