Got myself a 510 starter kit a week ago and some juices to go with it. I am feeling positive after 40 years of smoking, recent years have been 50 or more smokes a day!
I've got some 11, some 18 and some 24 juices. I got attys and cartidges with the starter kit and bought some Cartomisers and an echomiser as well.
This is the wierd bit:unsure: When I vape and inhale the chest hits AWOL levels and I cough and choke like crazy, I didn't with analogues. If I use the Atty and cart' it's not too bad though. If (wierd remember) I take a mouthful of vape, hold it in for a few seconds and then let the vapour out slowly and inhale it up my nose (Wierd!) and into my lungs I don't cough at all!
I don't think it is the "TH" that people talk about as it is a cough from the chest not the throat. I just had an analogue and no cough. Followed it with a drag on the Atty and Cart, no cough and then a drag with the Carto and I was hacking like Foul old Ron' !
Any ideas or suggestions (Threats not accepted but financial donations welcomed) please say quickly!

HaHa. I've been vaping a couple years and it's still hard to draw straight into the lungs sometimes. Is that what you're trying to do? You can't (well....you can, but...) vape like you smoked. Take a long mouthful. Exhale out your nose a little if you can. Then, breathe through your nose and mouth to draw it into your lungs. It's less harsh to me if I draw into my lungs using mostly my nose. Or, you just inhale and exhale mostly through your nose with your head full of vapor. With a little practice, it becomes second nature and you can draw into your mouth at the same time you're exhaling through your nose so that you get a big, full vape.

There has been some evidence posted around here that as much, if not more, nicotine is absorbed in your head as in your lungs. Personally, I find that skipping my lungs entirely is a little harsh on my head, so I try to do a combination of both. Main thing though is to not attempt to draw straight into the lungs. After awhile, you can do that, but wait till you have more experience. It also depends on the voltage and the juice. You'll find your own technique soon enough.

Good luck. You and I had the same smoking history almost, and I quit 35 years of 2-3 PAD with no effort whatsoever. So, you can do it.

My father is a very heavy analog smoker, but when he visits me he vapes on one of my extras because he doesn't like going outside in the cold, and I don't allow smoke inside. He gets the same choking like you are speaking of. He always says man that thing is strong! LOL I am not sure why unless he is vaping the same way he smokes, and i've told him he has to hit on it a bit different. After a few inhales he gets it right, but without fail he always hits it like his analogs during the first of his visit and gags on it.

I suspect you are just still hitting it like you did with your analogs. I think you will figure out a good technique before you know it.

If I'm getting your story correctly, only the cartomizer is giving you problems.

Not a surprise. There's a lot of cartos out there, with wildly varying performance. I recall my first go with them, using a cheap, no name model. I might as well have wrapped my lips around the exhaust pipe on my car.

If you must use a carto, get a good one; Ikenvape and Boge come immediately to mind. Cartridges never worked very well for me, but if you're Ok with them, I'm Ok—but give direct dripping a try: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/66848-guide-direct-dripping.html

I feel your pain, friend. I'm kicking a 35 year analog habit myself, and the vape is making me cough, too. Never happened with analogs - I suppose because I had 35 years of practice at that technique. I'm starting to get the hang of it a bit, but I still make mistakes when vaping while distracted. I do think the juice makes a difference - some make me cough like mad (mostly the strong mint or cinnamon ones). I just filled a cart of Strawberry-Banana that seems much milder and doesn't make me cough at all. Fireball Cinnamon just about killed me, but my God I love that one.

Congrats on your decision to quit smoking! That's one of the best things you can possibly do for yourself, your family, and your friends. Keep at it. You can do it, and so can I.

When you take a hit, hold it in your mouth for a few seconds, then slowly inhale it into your lungs. That normally helps a lot with the coughing.

It also, like mentioned, could be that your slightly allergic to PG or something along those lines. Try a higher VG juice. It gives a smoother vape and also takes some of the "bite" out of the nicotine, which should also help with the coughing.

You could add some VG to your juices, but thats also going to lower the nicotine level and dilute the flavor. If you want to keep the same mg and not dilute the flavor, order the same juice with a much higher VG content. Then mix the 2 to get the ratio you want. Then youll have the same mg juice without affecting the flavor, but with a higher % of VG.

Does it happen with all your juices? There are some juices that just choke me out when I inhale - Mr. E's Manic Mint Chocolate and TVR Peanutbutter Cookie come to mind. They make my lungs feel full and strained, almost like I'm drowning. I don't know why. Other juices from the same vendors with same PG/VG ratios are fine. It's just certain flavors do it to me.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. It is strange in that I am trying a few carto's, Atty's and an echomiser and various different juices, different strengths and flavours. There seems to be a levek where it doesn't get too bad. If I hold it in my mouth before inhaling the cough is worse!
So far the only one that makes me cough very little is a Virginia flavoured 11ml using an atty' rather than a cart. I did try it with a tank and that was okay too. I think I need to organise it so I can list what I do and the good or bad of it all.
