AMBER ALERT STOP PLAYING FOR A MIN.-COPY AND RE-POST! 3 YR OLD BOY TAKEN BY MAN IN ROCHESTER MI DRIVING 2006 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE. Plate #98B351 RE-POST NOW!!!! Come on friends... maybe we can help this little boy

This has nothing to do with e-cigs, but my sister posted it on facebook, and with as large a community that we have here somebody somewhere might be able to help this little boy.

Paste to your facebooks, twitter and wherever else you can. My birthday was yesterday and I want this kid to be able to celebrate his next birthday with his family.

And...do your due diligence, folks.

When it looks like an urban legend, it usually is. Don't pass along scary news from unknown sources without checking it out!

Just makes the world a little scarier seeming, and keeps people in the habit of getting scared without knowing facts.

Best,
Ande

If this has turned out to be a hoax than I am happy. But I received this information from my sister, as in sibling, so she is hardly an unknown source.

And comparing an amber alert to an urban legend is far off base. People should be scared, child abductions happen every single day, sometimes from their own backyards and even homes.

While I agree with you that due diligence should be used in following up on an alert. I think that you are wrong in the sequence of events. Sometimes minutes or even seconds can mean the difference between a live child or a dead one.

Stating that, I will always post amber alerts on every media I am associated with or have access to. I will follow up with more inquiry (after the postings). And will be happy to be wrong. But if I am not wrong and can save a child by spreading the word, then I will do it each and every time.

It's the people that sit around and research amber alerts and waste valuable time, and those that decide I don't need to pass it along because someone else will, is time that can save a life.

This is a scary world and people should be on alert for these things. Don't believe me watch the news everyday.

I would like to thank those that did reply, and I would also like to thank Knobbysmoo for doing the investigation and happily reporting it as it is.

"amber alert" has saved many children since it's inception. And I will be happy to take egg on my face anytime I'm wrong. But I stick by my guns and say we should be scared for our children, and I will always post first and then investigate. research (even at snopes, takes time, Time a child might not have.

Again, thank you all for replying so quickly.

Blessings

Snopes.com is my "go-to" source for checking whether a report I received by email is valid. Just copy some words from the Subject line of the email and paste into the search box on Snopes. I just now pasted "2006 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE. Plate #98B351" into the Snopes search field and immediately got this hit:
Urban Legends Reference Pages: Search Engine

The odds are excellent that you will recive these fake reports from a trusted source. I have received them from co-workers, friends, and relatives who were just passing along something they received from another trusted source. It only takes a second to check out on snopes.com, and checking them out first will mean that when something that is true comes along and you send it on, it won't be dismissed due to the "boy who cried wolf" syndrome (scary report overload).

Isn't there an official site/facebook page to double check them? Just wondering, it seems like if there ain't there ought to be.

excellent idea, I don't know if their is a page for it or not. Perhaps the ECF could also have a thread in the media section for just that.

Very eloquently put, I have used snopes.com for many things in the past, though this was the first "fake" amber alert I have ever seen. And in my defense (not that I really need one, since my heart was in the right place) but I did just have eye surgery and it is difficult for me to read, especially with a patch over one eye and glasses that don't fit over the patch to see out of the other crappy eye. So I skipped the snopes stop, copied and pasted, and just hoped for the best.

But I appreciate you putting into perspective by way of the "boy who cried wolf" the due dilligence needed as to make the alerts more alarming when the need truly arises.

AMBER Alert - America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response
You can go here for USA amber alerts. I've now seen three of these false alarms one of which was in my home town it was passed to me from a trustworthy relative as well. I got a cell call over two hours later telling me it was a hoax. I was driving around looking for the creep. I know time is of the essence but for the moment it takes to check it is worth it I suspect we've all heard the story never cry wolf if too many of these hoaxes are heard the amber alert will lose it's effectiveness.

Reverend, it's better to be wrong than not quick enough. We just had a nine year old girl Amber alerted last week. It was too late for her.

Elaine, thanks for that link, hadn't heard of it before.

I'm very sorry to hear that, and I obviously agree with the sentiment about being wrong than not quick enough. I'd rather have to appologise a thousand times for being wrong, than to see harm come to any child. But now other posters have come up with very good points about crying wolf. We live in an age of "instant information" and now that vocalek and others have given us quick response resources I will bookmark them for future reference. Although I do pray that we never need them.

Justice thank you for this link. Takes a Canadian to show us an american alert board :)

I feel the same way about wanting to find one of these creeps. I would not spare the rod if I got my hands on one. Though I'm a minister I think I would have a hard time not dealing out direct justice and dealing with the consequences later.

Thank you all again for posting. The world just isn't the same as when I was growing up. Back when neighbors could be trusted to watch out for each others kids. I remember when a kid scraped their knees and started crying three or four moms would be running out the door with towels in their hands, didn't matter who's kid it was, they all cared. It's sad really that times have changed so much.

I know there was probably just as many bad guys (and gals) around, but it was a lot harder to get away from the street justice if you hurt a kid. I.M.H.O.
