Survey -- Ever Use of Emerging tobacco Products by Robert McMillen, Jeomi Maduka, and Jonathan Winickoff

http://surveillance.mstobaccodata.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/2011-APHA-Presentation.pdf

The tobacco products were snus, waterpipe, dissolvable tobacco products, and "electronic nicotine delivery systems."

Respondents: Current (18.3%), Former (24.8%), and Never (56.9%) smokers.

Overall usage for snus (5.1%, n=162), dissolvable tobacco (0.6%, n=20), and ENDS (1.8%, n=56) were lower than the far more hazardous product, waterpipe (8.8%).

Use by never smokers of dissolvables and ENDS were almost nonexistent, 0.2% (n=3) and 0.3% (n=6), respectively. Snus was slightly higher (2.7%, n=48), and waterpipe was 5.4% (n=97).

Use by former smokers was 1.1% (n=9) and 1.5% (n=12) for dissolvables and ENDS, and 5.1% (n=51) and 11.4% (n=90) for snus and waterpipe.

Use by current smokers was 1.4% (n=8) and 6.6% (n=38) for dissolvables and ENDS, and 10.7% (n=62) and 16.2% (n=94) for snus and waterpipe.

In their small sample of users, adults with some college education were more likely to use snus, wateripe, and ENDS.

And of course

Use of these products among never smokers raises concerns about developing nicotine addiction, former smokers relapsing, and current smokers using these products to manage situations where smoking is not allowed rather than quitting.

They do note however, in 'Potential Limitations'

* Did former smokers use these products as a cessation aid?

The key findings of this survey are that:

- smokers are 22 times more likely to use e-cigarettes than never smokers,
- smokers are 7 times more likely to use dissolvable tobacco products than never smokers,
- smokers are 4 times more likely to use snus than never smokers, and
- smokers are 3 times more likely to use waterpipes than never smokers.

But the authors failed to acknowledge any of those significant health risk reduction findings for smokers (who use e-cigs, dissolvables and/or snus) and instead focussed on insignificant risks of smokefree product usage by far fewer never smokers and former smokers, while failing to inquire if e-cigarettes, snus or dissolvables helped former smokers to quit smoking.

Typical spin doctoring by Winickoff and Legacy.
