Certainly we don't want to see our authorities crack down on caffeine. At this point, I doubt they would find much success. If fact, I would think they would encounter quite a backlash as caffeine is quite popular (and regularly sold to underage persons).

Oh, don't think for one second that 'public health' isn't working on this. In fact, the case is already being made as recently as this past April. A quick Google search revealed this little gem (link is broken with two spaces due to it referring to 'other' products):

ht tp://www.science 20.com/internal_struggle_of_the_mind/should_caffeine_be_a_schedule_1_drug-154760

I have been a firm believer since the beginning of the anti-tobacco campaign that the slippery slope has been breached, and that we would see further erosion of our personal consumption choices....and indeed, that is happening.

nope the next place of attack will be fast foods and chubby people - the writing is very much already on the wall. I am just waiting for the law suits then they might get to caffeine. I believe the reason "they" could get to smokers was shame and guilt, there is not enough shame and guilt associated with caffeine consumption but fast food and an extra few pounds - oh yeah ripe for the pickin.

it is money but I think self preservation plays a part in the ongoing saga. for some reason that I can't quite fathom booze is golden and doesn't need to be shivering in its boots waiting for the hammer to fall - could be because it is a story of been there done that.

Hence my link to the transfat news (above) that just broke. But it's been in DC2's frog pan for years.

Booze is likely golden because that was shut down in a big way, once. But things have changed. There may be an 'opening' for that as well. However, it may be that it is 'under the influence' - is how they come up with these harebrained ideas. lol

Also, many pharmaceuticals have cognitive side effects. Being "under the influence" of BP can seriously impair the judgement of legislators, regulators, researchers and reporters in more than one way.
