Hey Everyone.
So this is the second time I've had a 901 overheat. A previous post of mine, where I actually got burnt, was due to me storing the Cart on top, with an auto battery. My guess is that some juice leaked in and caused the battery to fire off. That time, I kept it in a case and I smelt the familar smell of burning filler. When I grabbed it, the atty actually burned my thumb & finger. It also melted the cart.
Now for today's story. After the above happened, I only use manual batteries. Now these particular ones are not generics, but also do not have any cutoff time. It will fire as long as you hold the button in.
So I took a puff off my 901 just before I went to DD to get some coffee and laid it on my console in the car. Didn't notice anything unusual. When I got back and opened the door, there was a bad smell and light smoke/vapor. I saw it was the 901!
When I picked it up, the cart pulled out like taffy with part of it still in. Luckily I had a rag to be able to disconnect the battery from the atty.
So, and maybe this is just me, the lessons are if you are using an automatic battery, always keep the cart on the bottom if storing horizontal. If using a manual battery, especially one without a timeout, be sure it actually turns off and doesn't have a stuck button.
Knowing just how hot these little things can get, it would of been possible for a fire to result. ie: if this actually fell against some matches or lighter in my car.
Like anything, there is always a level of caution. Just don't think because they are battery powered they cannot cause harm. I'd say it is best to treat them like a lit cigarette and unscrew the atty a bit to prevent accidental ignition.
I also must say that this is a consumer beware issue and I still will continue to use e-cigs. I will just be much more careful.
ps - I do plan to upload a pic of my 901. Part of the cart is melted inside the atty.
