Just wondering if any of our vaper friends here on ECF study or teach martial arts. I was thinking of starting a "Martial Arts Vapers" thread in the lounge or something like that, but wanted to get a feel for who was out there.....

I've been doing martial arts since I was 8 years old....so around 38 years. I started out in Butokukan Karate, then in 1990 decided to get in Kajukenbo (Wun Hop Kuen Do branch) and Filipino fighting arts. I began learning Wushu and Tai Chi in 1996, then Kyudo in 2001. I have a school, teaching Tai Chi, Wushu, Filipino arts and Kajukenbo....and I love going to "work" every day! :)

Any fellow martial artists out there? Looking forward to hearing from you!

Brazilian Jui Jitsu. Not very far along. Still officially a white belt. My instructor is Shannon The Cannon Ritch. It's mostly MMA class now. But I do have a training dummy and tons of instructional videos and web tools. I just need a little more room in the living room to set my mat up and start using my dummy.

Of course I waited until I was 52 to start this stuff. LOL!

Hi @Bostlabs! You're never too old to start martial arts! :) I believe that people who start when they're older (meaning "any age after 30 years old") tend to pay attention to technique and finesse more so than brute strength and pushing to pain. :) I went through a phase in my 20's where it was all "No pain, no gain", and now I'm paying for it.....chronic plantar fasciitis, chronic knee pain, the knuckles on my right hand now act as a barometer when the weather changes (lol), and my back now constantly feels the effects of a car accident and a martial arts related back injury that happened when I was in my 30's. I keep wondering "I'm only 46 now so I shouldn't feel like this, should I?"

But now, its "train smart to train hard". But some things I miss are not being able to jump like I did when I was competing in Wushu, and not being able to take Ukemi very much.

My back had kept me out of class last week and then over the weekend I did a big ole flying trip that landed me face down in the kitchen with a dog under my right thigh. I had shifted so I didn't crush him, but my left knee didn't like that. :) Then a short time later, after we cleaned up my room full of popcorn one of the dogs walk behind me as I was stepping back. I managed to not fall but it extended my left knee.

So I've been limping around for most of the the week. Got back to my fitness gym last night and worked my upper body. My MMA gym is having it's open house tomorrow (Was LA Boxing, now it is a UFC gym) and my instructor is having a free self defense class for the ladies. So I'm taking my wife there. She likes Shannon. LOL :)

Next week, baring any major oops this weekend, I'm back at it for grappling and kick boxing. I'm at least 20 years older than any of the students. They under estimate me all the time. Much to their surprise. I still have a lot of fat and that layer is hiding muscles that I've been working on for over a year now.

I have a lot of fun doing this stuff and that is the reason why I do it. The other guys are mostly trying to be MMA fighters. I just want to not be the old guy that can hardly get around when he retires. :)

Sigh, too bad you aren't closer, I'd attend your school. :)

I practiced Bando from 1982 to 1990. The way we were trained took a heavy toll on the body, very old school. I still stretch and try to stay in shape but nowhere near as fit as during that time. This was in a different country, only safety gear used was the "cup". Kicks, elbow, knees could be landed anywhere but punches were restricted to body shots only (no face punches). As you can imagine a roundhouse to the face would knock the daylights out of the recipient! Each belt class (from white to black) practiced 2 nights a week under pretty sharp instructors and the 3rd night was club fights where instructors would just point to 2 students from each class for a 3 round fight judged by our grand master. About 100+ spectators would come to watch, serious injuries were common. I just shudder to think about it now.

Fun times for sure, amazing how fast a young and fit body heals and how clearly one remembers the intricate details of mistakes/ resulting consequences as well as the victories :) Very humbling.
Heh!

Who said anything about a young body? Not me. Believe me, when this 53 year old body gets clobbered by a well place jab or a well done arm bar I feel it. I just don't let them know it. I was about to say never let them see you sweat but in these sparring classes that is impossible.

I sweat like a pig just like everyone else. LOL! And when I wear my Jui Jitsu Gi, well soaked isn't the correct word to use. Flooded maybe. :D
