I've been playing around with the Phoenix and the vivi nova, rebuilding them with silica which I have really enjoyed. I'm debating trying cotton and ss mesh one day. Just curious if anyone is content with just using silica as their wicking material.
I would think if you used cotton you would end up vaping cotton. I don't think it would have a chance at standing up to the heat. I have seen ss mesh before though and I personally really want to try that.

Actually if you check out the modders forum, cotton is the new awesome wick material. As long as it is wet with juice, it does wonderfully, with much better flavor than silica. HOWEVER, if you ever let it get even a little dry then *poof*, wick is ash, and a new wick has to be made. Not to mention the disgusting vape when that happens. It is for that reason I am sticking with SS Mesh.
I could care less about the SUPPOSED health risks of silica, but the flavor difference is baffling.
Silica generally seems to produce more consistent results for me, but I went with cotton for one reason... Burnt silica dry hits make me want to gag. Cant stand dripping in regular atomizers because of it(I get that flavor long before its dry, like on puff 2) Slight cotton flavor when I get a dry hit is OK.
It's all personal preference I suppose. I am going to try to get a genesis style and do SS though. Just seems like it would generally taste better without fabric type wick.
I'd say it's personal preference also (wanna take a guess as to mine ). The regular atties are going to have to stay with silica wicks, ya can't dry burn cotton wicks . Unless and until something definitive comes along, I don't see silica disappearing from the vaping world any time soon.

I have benn using cotton in all my RBas without a problem. Anyone that is getting a dry hit or is getting a burnt taste, IMHO are not seasoned enough to
vape cotton. The drop in flavour and VP happens waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before that. Point to ponder

Dry burning is a myth that has been propogated accross ECF extensively. Attie are a semi disposable item. I easily get 4-6 months with an atty and do not clean or dry burn
I use cotton exclusively in Phoenix and Vivi nova tank. Silica wick leaves a nasty aftertaste in my opinion. I use SS mesh in DFW Ratank, which works best on this device. Stainless is the cleanest taste with no muffling of flavor at all, But cotton is the best with the other two in my opinion. Now I did wrap a silica wick with SS on the phoenix, and that was pretty good to, but the coil did not touch the silica so I did not get the funky aftertaste.
I use cotton, wrapped with SS400 mesh. It works great, wicks much better than silica too. It also seems to pronounce the flavor a bit.
What I have noticed though is that if your coil (or mesh in this case) is wrapped too tightly around the cotton, choking its wicking ability, then you get a constant "nutty" taste. It's quite obtrusive and pretty consistent until your coil is dry, but I guess it's all learning and trial/error from there on.
