I occasional vape O nic but I can vape it for about a day.

But I'm on the road to zero nic! Been vaping 6mg for about 3 months now. I have just started stocking up 4.8mg nic. So I have about a month supply of 6mg then I shall transition to 4.8mg.

with how much mg did you begin and in how many months did you reduce to 6 mg? do we have to calculate?

I am zero nic as well.. which goes to show the act of smoking is habit forming. I make my own mixture using VG and food flavoring...that's it... maybe a drop or two of distilled water.. I vape all day zero nic

How did you decide to use VG and no PG? Why do you need to add water?

@jfalbanese mostly, but others as well.
Thank you for sharing your experiences here. I've been analog free for 9 days or so and I love the freedom from the $20 a day at the gas station. I started buying 24 mg. juice and started with a Fuzion Vapors sampled and a 30 ml. of F.V. Vacation. Must of the juices were fruit flavored and I'm a bitter, black coffee person. FV flavors are strong (to me) so I cut the fruity ones with VG and enjoyed them more than straight. The Vacation flavor is mainly pineapple which is a weakness of mine and cut that 50/50 with VG as well. So basically been vaping 12 mg. with low throat hit. This thread gives me hope and I will be visiting the DIY thread before my supply runs out.
Thank you all so much for sharing and I believe that one of the posters, another "Friend of Bill's" is right on. His theory is working here at ECF. People sharing knowledge, being supportive, and never chastizing a member for a slip.
Love you all! Vape On!

This has been a really great thread for me, and am fascinated by jfalbanese's posts. Extremely encouraging. Started with 18 mg, then 12 and now 6 or 9 mg.
I would like to switch to 0 mg for evening so I can sleep better. I have some USP grade VG from store. Are there flavors that I could buy at a grocery store to mix with the VG for now? Until I order some 0 mg or move over to the DIY section of ECF.

Wow, what a great question.

If you want to, I'd encourage you to try it. I often use 0% nic for testing flavours, and find I don't need to switch back to nicotine too soon if I am enjoying it. I think we all find our way to 0% nic at some point; some slowly, some quick. Switching to 0% nic ocassionally helps me define where the boundaries of habit and nicotine addiction lie. It's an educational and worthwhile exercise for anyone.

Most of the flavours we use are food flavourings, however not all food flavourings are suitable for vaping. If they contain insoluble (in water) oil, sugars, or large amounts of alcohol then they are generally unsuitable for vaping. There's a sticky over in the DIY forum that lists LorAnn flavourings and highlights those that are unsuitable for vaping. Here it is.

Edit:
Did you know that you can also vape with no flavouring? Some people like it because they don't actaully want to have to deal with all the flavouring issues: They may not be able to find something they can live with and I have to admit the whole flavour thing can get bothersome when the flavour you thought was going to be great starts to taste awful two days later. (or less). The senses of taste are funny things especially for someone with recovering taste and olfactory buds. You can thin the VG with a few drops of water to make it flow easier, or you can get PG from the drug store and make a more conventional 70PG/30VG mix.

Thanks. Groceries are limited here to Kr chain store and one I call WholePayCheck. I'll stop at the former after work and see what they have in flavors. If I don't find that, I'll go with the straight VG or VG/PG mix.
When I ask for propylene glycol, is there anything special I should ask for? I don't want to go into an explanation of vaping since many people don't understand.

The propylene glycol should be USP (U.S. Pharmecopia) which means pharmaceutical grade (suitable for ingestion or injection). That should be the only type a drug store should carry.

Your VG should also be true vegetable glycerin USP grade. If it's just labelled 'glycerin' then it may be BG, beef glycerin made from animal fats. Some people report that they can taste a musty flavour or odour when vaping BG. Food grade VG or PG won't actually do you any harm, but your experience may not be as good and you should probably try to use the cleanest and best ingredients that you can get.

To tell if a food flavour is oil based, drop a few drops into a glass of water. If the flavouring disperses immediately into the water then it is water soluble. Oil based flavourings might float or glob around in the water and are not suitable for vaping because they (1) may change the vapour temperature of the juice the wrong way, (2) may not vapourise completely and therefore build up in the atomiser, (3) may produce something nasty if burned and (4) I'm not sure you would want to be inhaling anything oil based in any case.

I don't know of a simple test for the presence of sugars, however any rapid buildup of a dark deposit on the coils will probably indicate the presence of sugar. Most food flavourings use other things for sweetening such as EM, but you should avoid using flavourings that contain natural sweeteners such as caramel flavourings.

Do not use flavouring "essence" as these are most likely to be steeped preparations using raw alcohol as the main steeping agent. Note: there could be differences in terminology here. I am from Australia, so what is labelled as an "essence" here might be labelled differently in Tennessee (or even other US states).

Me either! In fact, 0mg is what I started with. I had already quit per se, but found I still missed the action of smoking and frequently would want to smoke "just one" when stressed. Thought maybe 0mg ecigs would be perfect for me and they are! Not to mention being dual purpose ... vaping the dessert flavors keeps me OUT of the desserts, lol.

I'm at 0% and I dont see myself quiting any time soon.

i have always vaped at 0mg... i smoked cigars socially before starting to vape, and decided that, even though i wasnt addicted to nicotine and didnt NEED to smoke, i wanted a healthier alternative to my social smoking habit. i have tried up to 18mg, and the throat hit was too intense for me, since at 0mg there is literally no throat hit whatsoever.

i dont think ill ever stop vaping, because the reason i started in the first place wasnt to lower my nicotine dosage. its something that i thoroughly enjoy doing, when im with friends or when im alone and need to cool down. its a relaxing, enjoyable experience and it has definitely become an enjoyable hobby.

as long as the flavor stays the same, ill continue to vape and add to my collection. oh and learn new smoke tricks, cause for a teen thats always fun :p

I found only 2 flavors that might work at the super Kr___ grocery store.

The Kr___ pharmacy would not sell me USP PG - thought that was weird, maybe another pharmacy will. I do have USP VG (Humco) from Walgreens.
These flavors do list the ingredients, but don't seem ideal. Most had a high % alcohol or sugar. Here's what I got:

Vanilla Butter & Nut flavor (water, PG,artificial flavor, xanthan gum, Yellow 5, Red 40)
Maple (water, artificial flavor, caramel color, PG)

Something named gum seems like it may not be good to vape, so I will search ECF for this, and if I can't find anything, I'll start a new thread in beginners forum.
So I'll mix with VG and see if an 808 cartomizer will take it, rather than gumming up my Kanger T3 or vivi nova mini and hopefully have something vapeable with 0% nic tonight.

Xanthan gum is a thickener and emulsifer, which stops ingredients separating. It dries to a hard substance and is likely to clog coils. The caramel colour, though probably a small percentage might also be an issue. You could see if there's anyone local to you carrying the LorAnn flavourings - maybe search Ebay by location.
