Anyone see this ridiculous post on the Canadian Lung Association's fb page: Canadian Lung Association

What a pile of rubbish.
Wow. Just wow...

I told them yesterday.
Thanks for posting this, was going to do it if nobody else had.

I hope everyone takes a minute to comment on their page. That's the only way we can let them know just how wrong they are.

It is not until you log in that you see there is a link to there e-cigarette's are naughty campaign which is:

January 21, 2013
Canadian Lung Association: Don’t be fooled by e-cigarettes!
During National Non-Smoking Week (January 20-26, 2013), the Canadian Lung Association encourages people to quit using proven methods

(Ottawa) For National Non-Smoking Week, the Canadian Lung Association encourages people who want to quit smoking to use scientifically proven methods and to avoid gimmicky unproven methods, like electronic cigarettes.

“Don’t be fooled by e-cigarettes. These electronic devices could be potentially harmful to lung health and are not an approved quit smoking aid by either Health Canada or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,” says Margaret Bernhardt-Lowdon, a tobacco issues spokesperson for the Canadian Lung Association.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that are designed to look like and be used in the same manner as regular cigarettes. These devices contain cartridges that may be filled with nicotine, flavouring and other chemicals. E-cigarettes electronically vaporize a solution creating a mist that is breathed into the lungs.

Although not approved by Health Canada, they are readily available to purchase in Canadian retail outlets and from the internet. In 2009, Health Canada issued an advisory warning Canadians to not use e-cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are not proven safe
“People who use e-cigarettes inhale unknown, unregulated and potentially harmful substances into their lungs,” says Dr. Theo Moraes, a medical spokesperson for the Canadian Lung Association and an assistant professor at the University of Toronto. “There are many nicotine replacement therapies approved by Health Canada to help someone quit smoking; the e-cigarette is not one of them.”
E-cigarettes may contain ingredients that are known to be toxic to humans including carcinogens and diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical used in antifreeze i. In initial lab tests, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found detectable levels of carcinogens and toxic chemicals in two leading brands of e-cigarettes and 18 various cartridges. ii

E-cigarettes have candy-like flavours that appeal to kids
The Canadian Lung Association is greatly concerned that e-cigarettes with candy-like flavours, such as chocolate and vanilla, are being marketed and sold to youth.

“We are afraid that e-cigarettes, if not regulated, may lead more young people to start smoking,” says Dr. Moraes, who is also a staff respirologist at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. “These products have candy-like flavours, which appeal to children and teenagers and can be bought by those under the age of 18. We are also concerned that e-cigarettes may lead kids to try other tobacco products.”

Many proven ways to quit smoking

There are many proven ways to quit smoking, such as individual or group counseling, stop-smoking medication and nicotine replacement therapies (gum, patch, lozenges, inhalers). “Many people think they can quit on their own, but getting counseling can greatly increase your likelihood of quitting and staying quit,” says Ms. Bernhardt-Lowdon.

About National Non-Smoking Week
National Non-Smoking Week (NNSW) is one of the longest running and most important events in Canada’s ongoing public health education efforts. Established in 1977 by the Canadian Council for tobacco Control, its goals are to educate Canadians about the dangers of smoking; to prevent people who do not smoke from beginning to smoke and becoming addicted to tobacco; to help people quit smoking; to promote the right of individuals to breathe air unpolluted by tobacco smoke; to denormalize the tobacco industry, tobacco industry marketing practices, tobacco products, and tobacco use; and to assist in the attainment of a smoke-free society in Canada.

Although I don't know why they feel the need to say it, I can understand why they would say such a thing. They aren't going to support anything that's not legally proven and tested of course, but it's unfortunate that they don't put as much effort into showing the possible benefits of an ecig as they do in trying to get people to avoid them.

Why post anything negative about them at all?

I really just don't understand why they chose to see the possible negative sides of it over the possible positives.

Interesting. No matter what we say and do, there will always be opposition to vaping. That's just a fact of life. I'm not going to say that vaping is the be all to end all, but, it's a thousand times better than smoking. I've been off cigs for almost 18 weeks now, and I feel great. I'm breathing better, my circulation has improved and I can taste things again. And the best part is, "I'm not alone!" I've gotten about 12 people to switch from cigs, and they're chirping the same tune I am.

We have to look at these kind of articles with a grain of salt. It's obvious these people making these kind of statements are not experts, most likely paid spokespeople for big pharma. Just follow the money. Throw the fear factor out there, "oh my god!.....our kids will be buying this stuff!!!" The supplier I have cards people that they believe to be under nineteen. They also don't sell to none smokers. IMO, the vast majority of suppliers are like this. I'm sure there is a few bad apples out there, if so deal with them.

These kind of articles show that they are losing the war against ecigs. Look at their argument, "you have to believe we are right ....... we don't have to prove it....... you have to believe us." I wore the patch and still smoked a pack a day, why, cause it doesn't work.

As everyone here at ECF knows e-cigs work. So the question is, are we wrong? Are we delusional? The answer "no". We're fine, they have the problem.

And so of course the news gets passed on to major media of course: Global News | Experts warn against use of electronic cigarettes amid National Non-Smoking Week

One step forward and two steps back it seems.

This is an especially disturbing situation. A national media outlet runs a story by an obviously "cub" reporter who still refers to e-juice as having the same ingredients as windshield wiper fluid.

This is completely unacceptable.

I tried to find a comment string or an email address without success.

I read threads here that call for a class action lawsuit against the Government. This is the place to start the media not with government.

I'm not a national media representative but I e-mailed my opinion expressing my disappointment that the CLA would not encourage smokers to use any means possible to quit smoking.
