I've been vaping for about 6 months now, and while I've cut down dramatically on how much I smoke (but admit that I still smoke sometimes, in social situations), I seem to have one problem after another with my e-cigarettes. If it's not e-juice leaking into the battery, its a horrible burnt taste. Or liquid getting into my mouth, or a weird metallic taste from god knows what. I feel like every time I solve one problem, I'm on to the next! Am I the only one experiencing this??

Nope, not the only one ... if you were, there would be half as many posts in the forums :)

I do have the occasional issue, but for the most part, I am now using a pretty bullet proof setup. Or should I say I am now PROPERLY using it ... I find that most problems are improper use or maintenance, and once you understand that, it's all down hill from there. As always though ... YMMV!

Yep, that's just how I started out. For the gurus around here to help you they will need to know what equipment you are using. My problems, other than the run of the mill stuff, quit once I found what worked for me.

To get over those last few cigarettes I was using I had to up the nic to 24mg for a while. DON'T GIVE UP! You can do it. :)

please list what gear you are using, and if you perform any kind of routine maintenance on it.

I use Kanger EVOD VV batteries, and Kanger Mini protank II tanks. I make my own coils from 30 gauge Kanthal wire (9 wraps around a 2mm screwdriver) and then I use CVS brand sterile cotton as my wick material.

I take fat vapes as often as I can and my coils can get really gunked up in a couple of days (maybe at most like 4-5), so then I clean everything, throw away the cotton, rinse/dry burn the coil, rinse again, dry burn it one last time..

Then I stick some more cotton in there..I use about 2 rice grains worth of cotton, roll that in my fingers till its as thin as a pin, thread it thru the coils, clip it off so maybe 4-5mm is poking out each end, prime it with juice and its ready to go. Fill up a clean tank, let it soak for maybe 20 seconds after its all put together, take a few dry pulls (no battery action there) and its ready.

After a rinse of the head I carefully dry it off.

I posted a link and some notes to a RiP Trippers video about rebuilding coils for that Protank II mini in my blog, and I talk about some tools I use to make it easier.

I discovered yesterday that I was seating my coil *too* low in my head, it just needs to be low enough to not touch the cap on it so it wont short out. I was placing them 1-2mm lower than that and as a result, getting gurgles or the tank was leaking lol.

A little fixing and so far...much nicer vapes and NO gurgles - or barely any...tanks can act goofy no matter what you do.

No matter how rough a go you're having, you're doing far better than someone else on here....and he claims to be a reviewer! So, I guess thats some Goodnews for you! Sometimes we just need to follow a little advice. I'm not convinced that the products that worked well for me , at one time, stopped working. I think my demands and expectations increase over time.

A little ejuice on your battery is pretty normal. The horrible burnt taste could be dry hits where the juice hasn't had a chance to work into the wick between puffs. It could also be a gunked up coil. If so, then either a new coil head would take care of that, or a dry burn. Watch a video of dry burning on youtube. TONS of visual info on there, good good stuff. You're most definitely not alone in this boat. We've all gone through it, at times we still do. This is a whole new experience and you'll continue to learn so much! It's become somewhat of a hobby for me. Never thought that would happen.

You are definitely not alone in this ashao. Unfortunately e-cigs are still in their infancy and the products that have been developed so far are not by any stretch of the imagination foolproof. They all need a bit of understanding of their finer points and quirks. And they all need regular maintenance.

As others has already said, feel free to let us know what you're using and what problems you are having with it and we will do our best to help. I have found that 95% of the devices out there can be made to work properly about 95% of the time, though some do have more challenges than others.

Nope you are not alone at all.

One on end of the spectrum are the people who tried it, found it too much bother and gave up.
(Or they're rich anyway so they just buy a good disposable or disposable cartomiser system)

One the other end there are the longer time smokers who want to stop so they have the incentive to MAKE IT WORK.
From this end you get the tinkerers trying to make the systems more user friendly and reduce recurring costs.

And I guess most people are like you- somewhere in the middle. Its too much trouble, but between the health alternatives and the potential cost savings, you can't quite give up.

I'm using a Twist and a Kanger mini protank. Heads are generally 2.5 - 2.8. Pretty basic stuff. I think my problems generally have to do with coils, if Youtube videos are correct... It's definitely becoming a hobby for me too, but I'm worried that it's getting too expensive! I feel that something always goes wrong, and then I have to buy something else, and something else, and something else - although that does seem to be the case with many people according to this forum.

I think I'd like to start building my own coils, maybe this would help? So then my questions are:
1) Silica wick or cotton?
2) What type of coil do I need to get?
3) Do I have to have an ohm reader?
4) And where can I buy these things? I'm based in Europe, and can't order from Fasttech as I just found out that that comes with a HUGE customs bill from the Danish government :s

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Quality vaping gear is usually the answer.........

I have lost the protank fight for the most part. I just don't think it's worth it, and it seems to fail when I need it most.

What you need is a vape which always works. Always.
This is what I've found to work. The good old 510xl carto tank, it always works, easy to find, and is dirt cheap. I also use the Smoktech RDA for dripping, with an ego twist. I wrap micro coils around a 4 or 6 penny nail with 30ga Kanthal wire aiming for 1.7 ohms and use a tiny bit of cotton for my wick on the RDA.
You do need an ohm meter of some type if you are going to play with coils, a shorted atomizer can wreck an ego real quickly.

The carto tank just works. And the dripper is more to play around with, also dirt cheap, about 10usd.

Hang in there my friend, you can make it.

I think the clearomizers (protank, ect...) are very hit and miss. They seem to be better over the years, but still are not consistant enough (IMO).

Have you tried cartomizers?

I find them very consistant, once you get the hang of filling them correctly.

I recommend the Boge cartos.

Once you know that you're happy with them, you could get a couple carto tanks.

I recommend the IBTanked tanks.

They are very well made, work great, and are very inexpensive compared to other glass tanks out there.

One thing about vaping for me is that it is never as hassle-free as just lighting a cig. I've gone past the horrible stage of having one problem come after another in a seemingly endless cycle. I would often give up and buy cigarettes out of frustration and the need to get my nic fix.

Now, I've been vaping for a year (around 6 months totally cigarette-free, starting from the time I got just about everything figured out), and I'm very very happy. I learned a lot in the process, and I attribute most of it to ECF.

I'm actually in the process of helping a close friend transition to vaping. I'll be guiding him throughout the way, just to spare him of all the errors, bad purchases, and frustration I went through.

I think we have all had period of time where it seems like absolutely nothing is working at all. I know that I did. My first month vaping was a nightmare of failed gear.

As many have said the simple old fashioned carto tank is probably the simplest most consistent solution. Hunt down the ECF user Baditude and have a look at his blogs he has a wonderful guide on cartos and carto tanks that makes using them even easier.

If you don't mind a little fiddling then a nice simple rebuildable dripper is a nice option. For a first time builder I like to recommend the IGO-L or the Octopus both can be had for around $10. Both are simple to coil and give a nice vape. The IGO-L is slightly easier to build with it's large deck and deep drip well.

It was the drippers that led me to my happy vaping place which is the REO Grand and an RM2 rebuildable dripping atty. It gives me the large juice reservoir of a tank with the flavor of a dripper. THIS however is NOT an inexpensive solution.
