I know some folks fill in the markings on their firearms with melted crayon or nail polish for a customized look. Others restore their golf club engravings with paint. Has anyone ever tried doing this to restore their engraving, for example on a Nemesis or Windrose or any mod that comes with ink or paint in the etching?

sounds like a great way to join the orange jumpsuit club... altering any of the identifying markings on a firearm is illegal. if you put a thin layer of powder coat on the whole receiver and you could still read the markings that would be fine. but filling them in is a big no no...

for your mod you could paint over the markings with a paint or resin and then lightly sand them down flush this would high light the markings

Way too literal guys, lmao. I didn't say I did, I just know people that have. Just an example.

oh for sure, most people will not, guns are worth more as close to mint and you can keep them. unless you have some serious coin to spend. but people do it. even though its not legal.

the concept would work for engravings and impression in any type of metal. check out this website Plating Kits Electroplating Kits Aluminum Anodizing Kits Powder Coating Systems Metal Polishing And Buffing Supplies - Caswell Inc
lots of good stuff for customizing a mod. you could plate your mod then use something like this patina
to give it an antique look could be a fun weekend project.

this thread just went way off track. I believe the OP was suggesting a way to restore or customize the original engravings, not remove them. I know because the exact example used is the first "custom" I did to my own Glock.

I am sure it can be done it just depends on how clean (not with alcohol, definition) the original engravings were. When filling in the engravings on my Glock it was easy because they were stamped in and the surface surrounding the engravings was smooth and un-porous. I opted not to use the crayon method just because it seemed less durable on a piece that would be exposed to heat and cleanings regularly, instead I used nail polish. I don't see this being a problem for your mods except for mods that have a brushed finish as not all of the nail polish you want to remove will wipe off as cleanly vs. if the mod was a smooth polished finish.

EDIT: I also did not do this to the Serial Number as this was intended to make the stampings stand out vs. be black stampings on a black slide.

Nice lookin piece! I'm actually just trying to make the engraving on my VR Nemmy black again. When I googled restoring engraving the first things that came up were firearms and golf clubs. I guess this convo coulda swung the other way and everyone start talkin about their putters, lol. Anyone actually try doing anything to just plain ol' Nemmy's before?

Shouldn't be too expensive to find out IMO, $.99 nail polish and $2.00 acetone free nail polish remover, paper towels (cause we all have 'em) and some patience. If the nail polish ends up bleeding out of the lines of the engraving too much don't take all of it off, just remove the excess with a small amount of nail polish, wait for the first coat to dry and then apply another coat and repeat until desired look is achieved.

If not maybe someone else will chime in with a better idea.
