Anyone get scratchy throat from Lydia's bamboo? Is this the right stuff?

I read this was the bee's knees, it's piling up in the back of my throat and causing swelling. Feels like a cat shedding on the back of my tongue. I boiled a few yards for 40 minutes with a water change in between. It tastes pretty horrible for about 10 minutes but then produces much better flavor and warmth than anything organic that I've tried. I tried to ride it out for the better part of a day, once I gave up and went back to cotton rope, the throat problems immediately subsided. It's very unfortunate and typical that the best performer is not working for me. I'm having a hard time understanding how this gets so much praise or how I am the only one this happens to. :?:

This lint pulls off with little effort, I thought the idea was to avoid breathing particles.

Someone mentioned putting some kind of filtering material in the drip tip to minimize any particle inhalation. Sounds like kind of a pain but I fear any wicking material is going to have some level of this "shedding" and/or a horrible taste. So far, silica has worked best for me as far as flavor/etc. (even though I know many people hate it)

I agree, silica is nice. The filter idea is great, however, I'm working with an A7-oid which causes every filter I've tried to fill with condensation and cut air flow after just a few drags.

The delivery device definitely makes a difference in everyone's accounts of success or failure, it's starting to look like silica is the best wick for the Oids. I'm using some cotton rope from Etsy that works OK but doesn't wick quite as well as silica.

I got caught up in the silicosis paranoia, but I'm in the process of convincing myself that the particles are not small enough to hurt me.

I've been using that stuff for months in Vivi Nova and eVod heads. I still use the stock silica, supplemented with a few strands of Lydia's on top of the coils, but I rebuild with only Lydia's when the time comes to do so. I use short, 8-strand wicks on both, with 3 extra strands on top of the coil on eVods.

I have never bothered boiling mine, but I've been meaning to do so, eventually. I haven't noticed any irritation from the stuff. In fact, I prefer it over silica, because silica caused me such problems. I noticed it often with silica, on my tongue and throat, and I suspect it of embedding deeply in my lip, once.

I'm quite sensitive to overheated e-liquid, though, and this stuff makes that happen fairly rarely.

I'm surprised that it would bother you, while cotton doesn't. They both should mainly be cellulose fibers, I would think.

Well, my soreness went away and wouldn't you know it, I just had to try again. Gotta be sure. Maybe crazy but I just want it to work. Hoping I either broke it in too fast and screwed up my throat, or it was just a fluke thing with a few strands that felt like hundreds. We'll see. For now I'm breaking it in without inhaling, lots of water.

This statement peaked my interest, because I noticed how much warmer the vape is, as compared to other wicks in the same coil. Perhaps it's an over-performance issue and I caused a mini allergic reaction, so to speak, sneak attack on the throat. I know different types of irritation can feel like hairs, like how a scratch on the eyeball can feel like a foreign object. Can you elaborate on your statement about overheated liquid sensitivity with this stuff?

Edit: and FYI the cotton I'm using is actually a twisted organic rope that is far different than cotton balls. I looks like 15 strands of Lydia's twisted, without all the lint and maybe a bit coarser.

I meant that I'm sensitive to overheated e-liquid, in general, and I rarely get 'dry hits' and the like since using the viscose bamboo thread. My particular wick and coil combination using bamboo is extremely good at delivering juice. I use a variation of BJ43's oval coil, using two sewing needles slightly smaller in diameter than toothpicks, with eight threads through it, and sometimes a few strands on top of it as well. I have never gotten a dry hit with a rebuilt eVod, and very rarely got them with the Vivi Novas. When I did, they were mild. Dry hits were quite caustic and common when I used silica.

I've not had much luck with any real rebuildable atomizer. My favorite is the A7, as it has better airflow than any of the side-air-hole designs such as the Phoenix. Still, the 'big barrel' atomization chamber designs leave much to be desired for me, because of poor airflow characteristics. With continued use, they all eventually cause me throat irritation.

I've stuck with Vivi Novas for a long time, because they focus the air around the coil very well, providing me with a smoother vape. The eVod is even better in this regard, and has replaced my Vivi Novas, until I find something better. It has an even smaller atomization chamber, and the bottom coil design provides a cooler vape.

I have worked a bit on making one of my A7 RBAs into a sort of CE2, using parts of an old CE2, but have never actually tried it yet. I was hoping that it would further improve the airflow around the coil, but it does so by raising the coil, inside the ce2 cup, very close to the top, and I don't favor top coils anymore.

I'd guess that you may not have that problem, if the A7 has worked fine for you before trying the bamboo thread.

I do suppose that the Lydia's may very well have smaller bits of thread shedding than some cotton products would. That would make sense.

I started getting that irritation again, so I stopped. When u took my A7 apart to clean it, the drip well was caked with fibers. I'm sure the design of the A7 along with the oid tip increases the chance of inhaling debris, just a small chamber with air intake underneath and the A7oid MP piped down right on top of the coil. I might try this later in a 22mm dripper, where the air has a chance to roll around in the chamber before it exits.
