Windows 7: you can keep it until 2020 | Enterprise | News | PC Pro
I was reading about making W8 look like W7 earlier, and it's not an official fix, so unless you want to start tinkering with a brand new computer and possibly the registry, best find one that does have W7.
I don't think I'd want to do it, but I don't like messing around with a nicely optimised new computer.

Computer OS upgrades are just a way to generate MONEY. There was Nothing wrong with XP, 100's of 1000's of computers were running it just fine. Each upgrade is to get people to shell out money for something they are told is better. It will have more bells and whistles, but that does not mean it is better. Then they stop the updates, time to make a choice, update or take a chance without updates. When you do update, it is not just the OS, most have other programs they use all the time, will they work on the new OS or will they need updated, or will they not work at all, also will your current computer run the new OS, if not buy another computer.
When I upgraded my office pc to Win7 last year it took me over a month to get things running, some programs didn't have Win7 updates, so would not work. In virtual machine I could run them, but it is dirt slow. So I ended up having to buy and setup new programs that would work with Win7, what a PITA. Everything works just fine now, but they will "Drag Me Kicking and Screaming" in 2020 when I have to go through this PITA again.

... Question now is, How do i do it.I was reading about making W8 look like W7 earlier
do all the updates on it Terry all of them then in the app store you can upgrade to win 8.1 for free do that and windows 8.1 is fine its what I am using
Terry you cheeky bugger, what's all this about me being old
My lappy has 8.1 on it, free upgrade from 8.0. To be honest I don't mind it. As soon as it boots up fully I press the tile that says "desktop" and it goes back to my usual old desktop style format, with all my icons arranged the way I want them to beThe only thing I'm not keen on is if I drag the mouse too quickly to the side or the corner of the screen the power options pop up. Not a deal breaker though. The Wife keeps hers' in tile mode and she's always complaining about it

It`s no where near as old as you.
Thats one of the things, them tiles, i just don`t like the look of it, so if a can just get the desktop format what you mention i should be ok with it. Only having a Larf mateIt`s no where near as old as you.
You will have to talk me through it mate, you and everyone else that is.

Ah i see it was trish...... Question now is, How do i do it.![]()
Ok cheers Ian, i will try to remember that. As for age related issues, you just got me thinking of that film where a baby is born and is very very old, and as he grows up he gets younger. Think it may have been brad pitt.If I remember right, it was one of the options when I first set it up. You can work with the tiles, but I prefer the old desktop format.
If you're old lappy was as old as me, it would still be like a newborn baby![]()
Thanks trish, i am sure it will be fine once worked out. It arrives on thursday so if i don`t post on here for a week or so you will all know why.Glad you got one on the way!![]()
You will need to upgrade it to 8.1 though. Update it fully before you do that and do a restore point if it doesn't do one automatically. Apparently, 8.1 had a lot of improvements over 8.
Then, talk to Ian about how he gets his desktop to look the same as before ...you should be OK with that rather than tinker around changing it to a W7 format.

By the way - do you already have an AV programme? ...or is there one installed on the new computer?Ah i see it was trish...... Question now is, How do i do it.![]()

I have Kaspersky on my desktop, but have the free Avast on my notebook - works very well.
(I also have the free versions of Malwarebytes for extra scans if needed, and Superantispyware for throwing out tracking cookies every few days - both set to only run on command not on start-up)

On this lappy i just use windows defender, and sometimes AVG. As for the new one i don`t know trish, but i will get avast if it has none.
Like I said Terry. I'm pretty certain I set it up that way when I first switched it on. When you first boot it up, you'll go through a load of different info and options screens. Just read each one carefully, so you don't miss the option. It took me about 2-3 hours to set mine up when I first got it. You can remove the tiles too, so if you use the regular screen it doesn't look as cluttered. The only time I use the tile screen now, is when I first switch it on. Then when I'm logging off, I press the windows key on the keyboard, takes it back to the tile screen, so I can switch it off.
All my icons are on the desktop, including the internet explorer icon for bringing up my google home page. You really can customize it the way you wantYou can link in all your e-mail accounts, so you don't have to type in passwords every time too.
