to switch it off Ian look at bottom left hand corner on your taskbar you have what looks like a window frame right click it and shut down and a lot of other stuff is there

Well cheers mate, I honestly didn't know that. I just tried it and you're right (obviously, I didn't close it down though ) You learn something every day - lot easier than the way I was doing it :D

Here's another question Ron. Have you noticed on your travels netting across the motorway, supported at either end by a scaffolding set up. I've spotted it on 2 main roads and over the A627M motorway. I've absolutely no idea what it's there for. Looks like some sort of Krypton Factor assault course . Any idea what it's for mate ??

The free Avast version is all I use Trisha. When I bought this lappy, they were trying to sell me Norton - I said no way. When I've used Norton in the past it was a pain in the bum. Constantly blocking safe pages and slowing everything down, as it was constantly scanning them. Avast, has blocked plenty of threats for me, even while I've been looking at undesirable sites  Sites like pigeon fanciers weekly

Benjamin Button, that's the film. I know how he feels mate, as I get older, I get younger looking and even more handsome :D

:lol: Thats the one mate, the curious case of ben button.

Thought it might be electric or phone related. Still prefer the Krypton Factor idea though  Bet it would be good fun to go across one of them :D

Not seen the film myself, but I do like a lot of Brad Pitt movies. I'll have to get it on Netflix :D

win 8.1 is a great learning curve mate

Well the day I stop learning, is the day I role over and start pushing up the daisies  It's not that I'm nosey, I just like learning new stuff :D

If it does say Ian, i have missed it  Not a problem to download though if it hasn`t got any.

Yeah mate, easy enough to do. If it's got Norton on it, get rid of it mate. Just my opinion, but I can't be doing with it.

I didn't know about that either, I've always pulled up the right hand menu and gone to the power options, lot of faffing about to shut it down, but that sounds a lot better, will have a look next time I use the laptop.

Thanks trish, i am sure it will be fine once worked out. It arrives on thursday so if i don`t post on here for a week or so you will all know why.
No defeatist attitude! It will work, OK
As soon as you boot it up, check to see if it has an AV installed, and if not, make it the first thing you do.

On this lappy i just use windows defender, and sometimes AVG. As for the new one i don`t know trish, but i will get avast if it has none.
I suggested Avast to one of our sons a long time back, and when he was helping set up things on my notebook, was surprised to hear he still uses it now :) It's good - updates itself and works in the background without intruding or slowing anything down.

...and where is it you buy your mirrors Ian?

Norton really screwed up my first computer, and McAfee did the same with the second. I've used Kaspersky IS ever since. To me, it's worth the annual fee for the security and the UK help if needed. I have all my work related stuff on the desktop though so like to keep it all safe.
The Avast on the notebook seems really good though.

Isn't that one of the things people made a lot of noise about with the basic 8 version, and it got included in the 8.1?

That's the way I've been doing it too Bob. Hat's off to Ron :toast:

It's not just my mirror's Trisha, the Wife tells me every day  I actually had a very pretty young lady give me a sexy smile today. I was that surprised it happened, I just winked back at her. I did have my wallet in my hand though, so maybe she was after my money

I've used Avast now for quite a few years, it's never let me down so far. Like you say, it works quietly in the background and doesn't throw up false alerts all the time.

I think it's a safety feature in case the cables come down then they won't land on vehicles, they have been doing it on the railways as well.

Makes sense Bob. The netting has been up for at least 3 months though on the roads I've seen them on - still no sign of the Electricity guys though. Why is that not surprising

Make sure you do get the film mate it really is GOOD. As for norton, i thoroughly agree with you. Had it years ago, and hated it. As you say it blocks even legit sites, so what chance have i got with the sites i visit.

Yep those dodgy sites would miss out on their best customer. No more Shanghai babes, or Ladyboys of Bankgok with Norton :p:laugh: And if it blocked fasttech, that would be a nightmare

and a nightmare to uninstall, leaves footprints everywhere, was a good program when it was sold by Norton, but then Symantec got hold of it, and it went downhill quickly, I use BitDefender myself, not free but a very good Security program.
